Condom Broke - Pretty Scared

Hello Doctors

Sorry for my poor english, I´m a 21 year old guy from Colombia. I will directly to the problem.

On August 31, I had sex with a 17 years old bisexual guy who I met that nigth. During the encounter the condom broke, so I was unprotected for a minute or three at maxium but he didn't finish (cum) because we stopped the encounter. I asked him if he was HIV positive, and he told me that he was pretty sure that he was negative altough he never took a test before because he always uses condom. I couldn't believe him, so two days later on September 2, I convinced him very easy to take an Elisa Duo Test (HIV & P24 Antigen) and fortunately it came negative.

My point is that I'm pretty sure that the guy didn't get HIV 84 days from the test, maybe is 80% likely that he also didn't get HIV 28 days from the test. That's 26 days before our encounter. The thing is that I can't stop thinking about this and so I want to ask you these questions:

1-) Is a high risk the pre-cum that he migth left inside me during those 2 minutes I was unprotected?
2-) Is likely that he got HIV during the 26 days before our encounter?
3-) In this case, what are my odds?
4-) Should I stop thinking about this? - Do I need a test?

Many many thanks for your time and responses, when he got the negative I tought everything was ok for me but, after a few days I started to get very scare about this, so I will really thank your advise.

Hello Juan Daniel,

You asked:-

1-) Is a high risk the pre-cum that he migth left inside me during those 2 minutes I was unprotected?

We think that the risk from pre-cum is very small indeed - if at all. We do know though that some people do become HIV positive after sex with someone who does not come/ejaculate and this might be related to pre-cum. The chances of this happening are very likely to be increased during the initial few weeks after infection - when people are likely to be very infectious.

2-) Is likely that he got HIV during the 26 days before our encounter?

From what he has said to you I think this is very unlikely.

3-) In this case, what are my odds?

If he was to be HIV positive then your chances of aquiring HIV will be highest because he will have been very recently infected. However, I cannot give you any more detail than that as it is entirely speculative. I think most people tell the truth and you have found that he was negative on an HIV DUO test - I think he was/ is telling the truth and that he is not HIV positive - therefore you will not become HIV positive.

4-) Should I stop thinking about this? - Do I need a test?

You do need a test. You have had unprotected sex with a stranger - even though obviously you both tried to make it protected. You can take an HIV DUO test at 28 days and then relax. I think though as I've said, that it is very likely indeed that he is HIVnegative and you will be fine.

very best wishes, Sean

Hello Doctor,

First I want to thank you your time and response. Today with the guy who I slept 20 days ago we took an HIV DUO test. For me it was negative, and for him was negative too.

The facts are is these:

- The condom broke during our encounter, so I was unprotected for 3 minutes at maxium, then we stopped.
- As I told you there was no ejaculation.
- He took a duo-test 2 days after the encounter and again today 20 days after,  and both came negative,
- I got a duo-test today and it came negative.

I asked him several times about his sexual life, and always he anwers me that he never had sex with out a condom, and he told me that his last encounter was 11.5 weeks from today.

Doctor knowing the above information what's next for me? should I move on? I need to take other test? if I have to take other test when? and what are my odds (I know you can't give me a number from a medical point of view but from your personal thinking maybe you can)

Many many thanks

Juan Daniel

Hello again Juan Daniel

I think you can leave this now.

The other man has had two HIV tests and both are clear - as is yours.

The HIV DUO test relies on testing bothe for antibody and also for p24 antigen - the p24 antigen is avery sesnitive marker and it is likely that one or other of you would have had a positive result if you had been infected by him 20 days ago.

My personal thought would be that you can now move on and forget this. If you want to be absoluetly certain then you can test again at 28 days - and then forget it for sure.

best wishes, Sean

Hello again Doctor,

As I told you the guy who I slept 31 days ago had two Elisa Duo-Tests the first: at 2 days and the second at 20 days after our encounter, both came negative for him.

I had 2 Elisa Duo-Tests too: the first 20 days after the encounter and the second today 31 days after the encounter, both came negative.

It was anal sex, I was the bottom and the condom broke for about 2 - 3 minutes, but there was no ejaculation.

You told me that if I wanted to be absolutely certain, then I should get tested at 28 days. So my question is: is this conclusive 31 days after the encounter?

I want to thank you your time and responses

Sincelrely,

Juan Daniel.

Hello

Im still waiting for you response, I'll have an update:

The guy took a fourth generation elisa test 38 days after our encounter, and I took a fourth generation elisa test too at 42 days after the encounter, both came negative.

I just want to know if this is 100% conclusive?
