HIV accuracy at 6 weeks

Hi Doc,

I posted on the wrong forum earlier

My SINGLE exposure was to a Chinese gal of unknown HIV status. The condom slipped midway through and the act was unknowning during her menses period as well.

I tested for HIV 4x, at 1st, 5th, 6th and 6 and a half week using OraQuick. All which was negative. The healthcare professional that attend to me said that was quite enough, and he was 100% certain i was in the clear. At this point i was puzzled as i thought the accepted normality is up to 3 months. Through which he explained from his years of experience im not infected, and at 6 weeks he is very sure.

He is not an expert in HIV, and im just a little worried to trust in him.

1. What is your opinion in this matter?
2. Ever come across people who tested positive in similar situations that i have been.

Thanks in advance for your earnest reply.

Mr Billy, I think you're probably ok. We don't use Oraquick in the UK for diagnostic purposes so our experience is limited but they are shown to be reliable in testing for HIV. The result will be around 99% accurate at six weeks. The tests you had earlier are reassuring but not as good as at the 6 week mark.Merv

Hi Doc,

Sorry your answer was kinda vague.

If i understand you correctly, you too suggest the 6 week mark is conclusive?

Hi Billy.

I think you are just about fine.As I am sure one of the doctors on this forum will tell

you in a little while. In my view, you have nothing to worry about.Dr Cummings repeatedly points out on this forum that a third generation test sucha s you have had is more than 99.9% accurate at 6 weeks after your last exposure. You are ok.

Best regards.
