Handjob and HIV Risk

Two weeks ago I received a handjob from a sex worker in Southeast Asia.  I had a small bump on my testicle at the time that I thought was a pimple.  I now know that it was in fact a genital herpes outbreak (my first).  I am now terrified that I have put myself at risk for HIV.  I have read that handjobs are relatively safe, but also that genital herpes greatly increases the chances of acquiring HIV.  At the time of the incident I believe I had only one small bump and it was closed.  She did massage my testicles for a minute though.  Also, she used lotion.

A week after the incident I had the runs for about three days.  Then I had a sore throat for two.  Just yesterday I developed a fever and headache.  I'm living in a foreign country with no resources available for someone in my position, and I'm really really scared.  Please help.

1.  Considering my genital herpes outbreak how likely is it that I am at risk from the handjob?
2.  What do you make of my symptoms?
3.  My fever started the same day that the sore on my testicle opened up (on its own).  Is is possible my fever and headache are related to this?

Any other advice or information you have for me would be greatly appreciated.  As I said, I'm alone and growing increasingly anxious.  I just don't know what to do.

Hello,
Thank you very much for your post and welcome to our forum.
I do not believe that you need to worry.  You have not put yourself at risk of HIV infection.  A hand job doe not carry any risk, even in the presence of a herpes infection.  That would only apply if you had had unprotected penetrative intercourse, the presence of a concomitant herpes infection would increase the risk of HIV transmission.  However this did not happen; therefore the fact that you had an outbreak of herpes is irrelevant in your case.  Let me answer you questions here below:

1.  Considering my genital herpes outbreak how likely is it that I am at risk from the handjob?
NO RISK OF HIV INFECTION AT ALL WHATSOEVER
2.  What do you make of my symptoms?
YOUR SYMPTOMS ARE NON-SPECIFIC SYMPTOMS AND ARE LIKELY TO BE THOSE OF A SIMPLE VIRAL INFECTION. I AM CONVINCED THAT THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HIV.
3.  My fever started the same day that the sore on my testicle opened up (on its own).  Is is possible my fever and headache are related to this?
IF WHAT YOU HAVE IS AN OUTBREAK OF HERPES, ALL YOUR SYSTEMIC SYMPTOMS COULD BE RELATED TO THIS.

Best wishes,]
Dr José
