HIV Subtype testing

Hello

Sorry Dr to get back. Lately, I see a lot of white spots coming on my skin( i m dark skinned asian from India).I was diagonized as Vitamin D deficiently. This got me thinking if I had false negatives and all of them were done through labcorp. I was also told that these tests for HIV1 group m (a-h) only, the test is called icma hiv1/o/2 test and the pcr also checks for HIV1 group m (a-h). Should I check for any subgroups specific testing or do a hiv2 pcr

OK, even lower risk in the US than in India.  These other HIV types are essentially absent in this country.  The same test you had are used to protect the blood supply, and nobody has acquired HIV by transfusion in the US in recent years -- showing that no HIV infections are being missed by these tests.

Hello Dr,

Thank you for getting back to me. All these tests were done in US and my exposure was in US only, was giving you my racial background only. I do suffer a very irrational fear of HIV since one of my cousins died of this disease. My worry is mainly because of the cunnilingus because what I read giving someone oral sex has a higher risk than getting one. Thank you for your advice.

Welcome to the forum.  But I am concerned that you continue to have inflated fears related to your extramarital sexual exposures.  As discussed in your previous questions on the STD and HIV forums, all these exposures carried little or no risk for STDs.

And the risk was even lower for HIV -- zero risk for practical purposes.  HIV is not transmitted by cunnilingus or hand-genital contact, and rarely if ever by fellatio.

While I am not entirely familiar with HIV types circulating in India, in general the unusual types you mention are extremely rare outside the areas of Africa where HIV evolved.  So even if there was a miniscule chance of HIV infection from your exposures, the chance you were exposed to these rare types is even lower.  Finally, even these uncommon types are detected by one or more of the many HIV tests you have had.

The tests you had were entirely reliable and show you don't have HIV of any type. Most of the other tests you had also were unnecessary.  For example, it was a waste of money to be tested for HTLV I and II.

Finally, the skin changes you describe are not suggestive of an HIV infection.  See a doctor, preferably a dermatologist, if this continues or you remain concerned about it.

My advice is to stop testing for HIV or any other STD and do your best to stop worrying about this.

Regards--  HHH, MD

The subgroups that I read about are I,J,K and concerned since Adiva Centaur HIV 1/0/2 test checks for HIV 1 Group M(A-H), Group O and HIV-2(not sure about subtypes). Should I test DUO or any thing specfic now. Please advice
