Hi, Dr H.. i went to the docotor to get my secodn time test result today.. the doc told me he hasnt got the result yet.. but he called the lab, some ppl from the lab told him that one of the premilinary tests result is negative.. they need to run several different tests for me... I am not quite sure why they have to run different tests for me... it might because i got a postive on my Elisa test for the first test?.. they seem very serious about this... doc said my chance of being positive is low.. but he will let me know in a few day after he got the result on the paper..
so what do u think Dr HHH.. am I ok? Can i let this go? I hate waiting for the result... i cant stop thinking abt this..I just want it out of my mind.. ..
Actually, the rate of false positives on the ELISA is fairly high based on medical standards. The reasoning is that the ELISA has a tendency to pick up on other things that are not HIV. That's why the Western Blot is used to confirm the ELISA. Most would consider a positive ELISA and negative Western Blot to be a negative HIV test.
I'm sure that you'll be fine.
Those who tested negative WB and got postive WB the second time are usually those who have tested too early during the window period (within weeks after infection). Since you tested way outside the window period, you can expected your second test result to be negative. I have also heard cases where people continue to tested positve with elisa but negative with WB, which means negative. False positive for elisa isn't unusual.
Thanx for ur adivse..Dr.H
are these symtoms i discrebed above possibly be HIV symmtoms?
do u know the rate of false positive result on ELisa test by any chance? i know it is rare.. that's why i am worried so much...
do u know any cases that someone who tested negative on WB got a positive result on WB at the second time?
Thanx so much..Dr.H.. i really appreicate it if u can help me!!!
Most likely you do not have HIV; I expect the follow up tests to confirm that. Clearly you have been at low risk for HIV as well.
Follow your provider's advice; or if uncertain about his expertise, ask for referral to an infectious diseases specialist, or to any provider with particular expertise in HIV/AIDS. But in the meantime, relax; almost certainly this will turn out OK.
Good luck-- HHH, MD
