Hiv screening and testing

Good afternoon Doctor,

First of all I am from the UK and about 5 years ago I put myself at risk of HIV infection in Prague and 4 years ago I also had a risk of HIV infection in Bangkok Thailand. It took me arond 5 years to build up the courage to get a screening / test done.

I understand there are different strains of Hiv and I am asking the question whever all these would show up on an Hiv screening / test taken at a G.U.M. Clinic in the UK. If you had a chance of Hiv after having sex in Thailand and also Europe (Czech Republic) would you need to take more then one test? ONE screening at GUM was taken recently and was negative. Does this mean diffinatley no HIV? Many thanks

Doctor I feel very relieved that I can fully rely on my recent test and can't thank you enough for your information. It has been a very very difficult period of my life and now hopefully I can move on and get a good relationship back togeather with my wife and daughter. All the best to you and everyone.

No impact of antiinflammatories on results.

One a person has HIV, their tests are positive until the very latest stages of the disease.  You do not need to worry.  Put you anxieties aside.  EWH

Hi - Sorry for my questions but I am still anxious. Because I had a  screening / test 4.5/5 years (G.U.M Clinic) after the first risk of Hiv (Wish I had it earlier as it has been playing seriously on my mind for 5 years) are you sure that the negative results would still be v.accurate ?

Thank you doctor for the quick reply. - Just one more quick question - I had been taking Anti-inflammatories for a knee problem before and at the time of the screening and forgot to tell them at the G.U.M.clinic. Could this mess with the results ?

You do not have HIV.  No reason for further concern. The variant strains of HIV you refer to are rare and when they occur they cause "indeterminant" results which are then further investigated.  One test is sufficient.  You can be confident that you do not have HIV.  EWH
