Risk, test, illness

i had "low risk" behaviour on New Year 2007(01/01/2007) with a gay man.He licked my body with his saliva, and at that time, my body was very sensitive and had some fresh cuts. we did some handjobs, his precum (a lots) was on my dickhead(uncut), however, no anal, no oral.
on day 8(08JAn2007), i got flu-like sick in the morning, something like lump in my throat, and very tired. in the afternnon, i got high fever, nightsweats, all these symptoms lasted for 5 days, recovered12or13/Jan.2007. i went to the local health centre, the nurse told me that does not look like Flu, she did some oral sample test for mono, the result comes back with Negative. on day 14(14/Jan/2007)i went to test for HIV(antibody), also negative, i know it was too early.
i was really scared by my symptoms, cos i never had this before, the info on website, ARS timing is very differ, someone says starts on day 7, someone says takes 2 weeks to occur.
i asked him to have a test on 16/Jan/2007, was negative, but nurse told me that his paper only can tell he was negative before Oct/2006.
1. if someone experience ARS, the antibody test can detect the antibody during illness? or must wait for another weeks?
2. ARS timing? occuring on first week or at least 2 weeks later?
3. i am going to have a test today, 52 days. do you think would be reliable?
4. the AIDS help line lady (Finland)said i have small risk, do you think so ?

Many thanks for your time, Dr.H. i am so scared please give me some hints about my illness.

i have read your comment in a patient forum, you said: The antibody test might take a few more days to become positive after onset of symptoms. Does it mean quite many Positive cases can be found during the ARS? there is a guy said the antibody test is not reliable during ARS symptoms. i was confused. just as you said, quite many poeple experience the ARS in first weeks after expouse, but, the window period still be considered as 6 weeks, if the symptoms show up, positive result should also be confirmed?

if a person experience the ARS on day 8, what is possiblity for him to have a positive result on day 14?( i mean standard antibody test like 3rd generation by machine)

standard window period is 21 days average, could i say by this time, the symptoms finished and antibody detectable?

thanks a lot Dr.HHH.
i just came back from the test centre, the result will be published next tuesday. The nurse told me that no worries with this event.
I could not understand my symptoms since you said very similar as ARS, i am in big fear again. My all behaviour dont inlcude any anal or oral, POZforum people said i am totally no risk. if i get HIV, how this could happen?
you have told people in this forum that low risk behaviour espcially for a single event, the HIV test is not required.
What do you think my partner's negative result? he tested two weeks after we had ' sex'.
How do you find my test? you still think i am kinda in a single low risk event no test required?
you are an expert in this field, i am very expecting your comments, waiting for the result is not a nice thing to me.

Re-read my original reply.  What don't you get about "You had a no-risk event", "Your symptoms are similar to those of HIV, but also to a large number of other viruses or other illnesses with identical symptoms" (all of which are much more common than HIV), and "You can expect a negative HIV test result"???  Do you really think that after 25 years of the AIDS epidemic worldwide, you're going to be the first person to acquire HIV this way?

Waiting for results may not be "nice", but what can I do about that? You are badly overreacting.  Mellow out.

You had a no-risk event, even if your partner had HIV and was in a seroconversion window.  Saliva does not transmit HIV.  If you turn out to have HIV (which I do not think will happen!), it would have to be from some other exposure, not the one you describe here.  Your symptoms are similar to those of HIV, but also to a large number of other viruses or other illnesses with identical symptoms.

1) Yes, symptoms can start before the antibody test becomes positive.  But in most cases it is positive, and your negative test in January was somewhat reassuring.  2) ARS symptoms typically begin 1-2 weeks after exposure.  3) The test result at 7+ weeks (52 days) will be completely reliable, whether negative or positive.  (I'm betting on negative!)  4) I agree with the help line advice.

You can expect a negative HIV test result.  Best wishes--  HHH, MD
