Scared... Please help

Hello

Long story but I'll keep it short. Been married for the past 7 years to my only sex partner. Last december we decided to seperate because of years of fighting. Soon after I hooked up with a female friend. She always had a crush on me so she says. She's a friend of the family and I've know her for a long time. Before having sex for the first time i asked if she was clean and she said yes. We've had unprotected oral and vaginal sex five time with last exposer 3/1/2011. (also wanted to add that i have a broken tooth in the back of my mouth and it bleeds from time to time) Ever since then i started thinking about what I did so I had a ClearView Complete Rapid done on 4/27/2011 and it came out negative. The follwing week I saw my doctor and she ordered a ELISA Antiboy test on 5/2/2011 which came out again negative. She gave me a physical on 5/12/2011 and I requested a HIV antigen test and again another negative. She did notice that i had a swollen groin lymph node but I feel like I have one under my check bone. I want to know if  I should continue testing and if so for how long. I also want to add that I have been having thin stools with mucus, bloated and gas problems. I also did get sick after our last encounter but i can't remember if i had a fever. I did remember have a soar throat, stuffy nose and cough. Please help doctor. I need guidience. She was going to the health dept this week but i told her to wait until next week because she has an appointment to see a doctor on tuesday 5/31/2011. (So to recap ClearView HIV Rapid finger Prick 4/27/2011 negative, ELISA through Quest on 5/2/2011 negative, HIV Antigen 5/12/2011 negative) thank u

I see no need for testing.

This is not a virus which is dormant and undetectable. If you were infected, the tests would show it.  EWH

No risk for HIV from either deep kissing or receipt of oral sex.  The quoted figure for HIV risk, if one has oral sex with an infected partner is less than 1 in 10,000 and, in my estimation that is too high. Some experts state there is no risk at all from oral sex.  Neither of us on this site have ever seen or reading the medical literature of a convincing instance in which HIV was passed by oral sex.  You can keep celebrating.  EWH

Welcome to our Forum. I've read both your questions and your recent interchanges on the HIV Prevention community site.  It's clear that you're worried about your recent contact but I'm not sure why.  Could it be that you have a couple of swollen lymph nodes?  If so, please put your fears aside.  Lymph nodes can swell due to any of a large number of infections both viral and bacterial, as well as due to allergic reactions, due to autoimmune disorders and other problems.  For this reason we encourage clients not to worry about isolated swollen lymph nodes in relationship to HIV because they are such a non-specific problem.  When a person has swollen lymph nodes, the chance that they are due to HIV can be measured as a fraction of 1%.

As far as your partner is concerned, she sounds to be rather low risk.  i would point out that the likelihood of a non-IV drug using woman in the U.S. having HIV is less than 1 in 10,000.

Finally, you have had conclusive testing for HIV which proves that you do not have HIV.  Any HIV antibody test taken more than 8 weeks after last exposure or a combination of an HIV antigen test and antibody test taken at 4 weeks since last exposure provides definitive evidence that HIV infection has not been acquired.

Bottom line, believe your tests.  You do not have HIV.  Some of your symptoms may be a manifestation of anxiety or some other problem but we can be sure that they are not due to HIV.  I hope my comments are helpful.  EWH

I trust your decades of excellence in your medical field (I wouldn't pay the 20 dollars if I didn't believe in your credentials). After your last answer on May 29, 2011 02:59PM I decided to move on. I saw my new doctor on monday and he agreed with 8 weeks being conclusive . However, after detecting several enlarged nodes in several places he recommended another test to rule out persistent generalized lymphadenopathy. Does his  reason for retesting me one more time makes sense if my result from week 8 and 9 was conclusive? Is it common to only have persistent generalized lymphadenopathy with no rash and fever. I have a follow up with him next week. I give you my word as a man not to write another word until I post my results tomorrow. Thank you again for the opportunity to write one last comment.

Under the advise of my new primary physician I decided to take a final antibody test this week. (This will be about 17 weeks since vaginal exposure and maybe 10-12 weeks since the unprotected oral) I also did get confirmation from a trained medical physician regarding my swollen lymph nodes so it's not a figment of my aniexty. My other symptoms are fatigue and night sweats. Please allow me to post my results this friday. (Also my last post regarding my female friend, I heard from a friend that her result was negative I haven't talked to her since mid may) Thank u for your time Dr. Hook.

Hello Dr Hook

I just wanted to report that my friend's HIV test result came out negative today... Her doctor gives all his new patients an HIV test so I'm very happy about that... I was going to do one more test since Dr. HHH says that it rarely takes 3 months to turn positive but I won't... I'll continue to work with my doctor to figure this groin lymph node thing out (I pray to god no cancer)... I truly wish you good health and happiness Dr. Hook. Thank you : )

I apologize Dr. Hook for my repetitive questions. I've mellow down so I'm sorry about that. My friend had her blood drawn this past tuesday so we're waiting results. Miami ranks top 3 in the nation in HIV so that freaked me out. She's also admitted she has rarely used condoms with her previous relationships. I've learned my lesson and for now on will practice safe sex. Thank you again

These will be your last answers.  Most of these are repetitive statements of what has alreay been sai:

1.  Zero.
2.  I doubt that you are feeling lymph nodes.  Detection of swollen glands is a medical "art form".  Clinicians train hard to detect subtle abnormalities and to try to detect them in yourself is fraught with error, both because you might miss them and, if they are present, interpretation of why they are present is difficult.  This is because "glands" are lymph nodes which can swell due to any of a large number of infections both viral and bacterial, as well as due to allergic reactions, due to autoimmune disorders and other problems.  For this reason we encourage clients who are concerned about swollen glands to check with their own health care providers rather than try to diagnose themselves and, if swollen lymph nodes are present, not to worry about them in relationship to HIV because they are such a non-specific problem.  When a person has swollen lymph nodes, the chance that they are due to HIV can be measured as a fraction of 1%.

Your concerns are misplaced.  You will not be the first person to get HIV from receipt of oral sex.  There will be no further answers.  EWH

Good afternoon Dr. Hook, I have just a few questions if it's ok with u. First, what are the chances of someone becoming positive 8 week after unprotected vaginal sex (please remember  I receive unprotected oral a month later 4/1/2011). Second, I'm still suffering from irregular bowel movement (malobsorbtion) stomach craps and feeling of fullness. My stool is coming out pasty and wet with a foul smell. I'm also loosing weight which isn't normal for me because I'm over 300 pounds and nothing has changed about my eating habits. And finally my groin lymph nodes are still swollen, another one below my armpit and I feel pain on my leg right above the ankle which I think is another lymph node. Also bellow my tongue I have a node that's swollen on each side of my whartons duct. My friend will have her antibody test this tuesday and I can't wait. She's always coughing and fatigue. Also she suffers from stomach craps and diarrhea and she also gets irregular periods and really bad cramps.(She works with me) I don't feel comfortable with her unknown status. Something doesn't seem right to me. I'm sorry to bother u this weekend but if u can please help answer my questions it would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to be the first to get HIV from a bj. Also she's has a history of unprotected sex and her last HIV test was over 3 years ago. (I apologize for bad grammar and misspelling)

It's amazing how powerful the human mind is at making u feel sick. I feel like my lymph nodes in my armpit feels swollen and sore but it's probably me rubbing them. I also lost some weight too. Either way I still plan to see my doctor again next month about my lymph nodes. You kick *** Dr. Hook. Have a good evening and thanks again for your help.

Thank you for your help Dr. Hook. If u feel I'm fine then I won't re test next  month. Do u think that's a good idea? And can the virus remain dormant in the body. If u can answer my last 2 questions it would appreciate it. Thanks Dr. Hook.

Thank you Dr. Hook for your quick reply to my question. As I was celebrating last night I remembered her given me unprotected oral sex for no more then a minute but I can't remember if it was in late march or early april. It was late at night. We also still french kiss but no vaginal sex since 3/1. Do u think I'm still at risk. I'm sorry for sounding crazy but with my limited sexual experience and my stupid decision to go unprotected I can't seem to mellow down. Thanks again : )
