oral and rapid tests

Hi doctors.  Here is my issue:  over a year ago I gave unprotected oral without ejaculation to a ts of unknown status.  I am married and now regret my actions every day.  That regret manifested into HIV fear and I began getting rapid tests. Couldn't even face my own doc for a lab test.  Had a couple negative oraquicks with oral fluids up to 13.5 weeks.  Then the finger prick clear view stat pak at 11.5 to 46 weeks.  3 of them.  Also had an insti the same day as the last stat pak at 46 weeks.  What is bugging me is not getting a lab based test.  I have had unprotected sex with my wife after these negatives.  She is sick now withaches sore throat and fever so iI am freaking out again.  Can I continue to rely on these rapid results?  Thank you.

Thanks for the thanks; I'm glad to have helped.

My opinion and advice would be identical if you were in my office.

Thank you doctor.  I will put this behind me, stop testing and work on being a better husband.  I expect that would be your advice if I was sitting in your office, right?

You are really doing great work and I really appreciate your consideration of my case.

Thanks for the apology -- but I don't normally look at that feature of MedHelp, so no problem.

False negative results are rare; you needn't worry about it.  From a pure risk standpoint, you didn't need testing.  But it probably was a good idea for your peace of mind.

Sorry doc.  I accidentally hit no on the helpful? survey after your answer.  You have been extremely helpful.  I look forward to your response to my additional questions.  I do plan on having fun tonight thanks to you and all the great work u and Dr. Hook provide.

Thank you doctor.  This is clearly guilt driven.  So I shouldn't worry about false negatives?  Did I even need to test in the first place?

Welcome to the forum.

First, you had an essentially zero risk exposure; it is virtually impossible you acquired HIV, even if your TS partner was infected.  Take a look at the thread linked here for more information on oral sex and HIV transmission:

Second, your test results are entirely reliable.  The oral fluids rapid test takes a bit longer than the blood tests (either rapid or lab based) to become positive, but beyond 3 months they pick up all infections for practical purposes.  And with negative results on both the Clearview and Oraquick, you can be doubly certain you don't have HIV.

And of course your wife having sore throat and fever doesn't imply HIV.  Her symptoms obviously are typical of a cold, nothing more.  If they persist or she is otherwise concerned, of course she should see her doctor.  But there is no way they are due to HIV as a result of your sexual indiscretion last year.  They have absolutely nothing to do with that event.

I hope this has helped.  Best wishes-- HHH, MD
