You have to be careful with supplements, some of them can interfere with your meds...
From what I understand a standard multivitamin and fish oil is OK.
Selenium might also have some benefit, but that study wasn't done that well...

this is something that you might want to discuss with your doctor.  i know that, while any kind of supplement would be beneficial to your overall health, some might interact with your meds.  I think that the main thing to worry about at this point is getting and staying healthy...body and mind.  heathy eating, exercise, and meditation should probably be enough now

My question is why you are asking a patient-to-patient HIV Prevention forum what type of supplements to take?

Isn't your question more appropriate for your Dr?

No offense.

I work with HIV/AIDS PTs alot and I am positive myself.  I am sorry your nursing caused this. My mother is a RN and I know the worries.

Efavirenz and Combivir is one of the most powerful cocktails in the current cocktail preference.  I do want to ask why you went on drugs so early if you are newly diagnosed?  The patients I deal with and the current methods of recommending cocktails are if the Viral Load is over 10,000 and the T-Cells or CD-4 is under 400.  The longer you wait on getting on cocktails the less likely you are to build a tolerance to drugs.  Yes, most ID doctors push starting right away, but the patient should be told that starting meds immediately will not increase chances of and Undedectible levels.

Combivir is always going to be the main component of most cocktails.  You need to have a Geno-type and Pheno-type test done every 3 -4 years to make sure the drugs are working or if you see an increased level in your numbers.  Doctors do not like to do the test because of the cost related to them.  My partner has one done every time his levels change.  These test tell you that the meds are working and which meds you will not respond to.  It is also good to get one now, so you and your doctor will know what meds the strain of HIV you have will or will not work on.

If you have any question I can be contacted at 318-640-2012 or ***@****.  I will be glad to help you with any questions you have.  I am the Chairman of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Region 6 Consumer Advisory Council for People Living with HIV and AIDS.

God bless and God Speed.
