13 weeks post possible exposure

by estevato, Aug 26, 2009 07:41PM
Hello Dr.,
I posted before under this forum under title "Trouble With Stripper".  There is my entire episode in detail. To be general, I am a male and I payed to have vaginal intercourse with a female stripper approx. 13 weeks ago.  I was intoxicated and the condom was on barely to cover the tip of my penis (only the tip was covered and the head may or may not have been exposed; the condom could have slipped repeatedly inside, I really couldn't tell). Sex lasted apporox. 6 minutes.

week 1 after incident: acquired fever/ swollen tonsils/headache/body ache- was told it was tonsilitis

week 6 after incident: tested NEGATIVE for HIV, CHLAMYDIA, GONORRHEA, SYPHILIS.

week 10 after incident: got fever/swollen tonsils/headache again/  ENLARGED LYMPH NODE UNDER LEFT TONSIL
Took HIV rapid test- NEGATIVE RESULT ( taken 10 weeks after incident)

week 13 after incident: left lymph node under left tonsil is enlarged again ( may have been continuously swollen, I didn't notice)

I was convinced after the NEGATIVE 10 week HIV test that I was NOT infected. I felt great!
At week 13 (this week) when I noticed my left lymph node was swollen I am anxious again and having doubts.

1) Do you recommend further testing?
2) Are my doubts/fears based on an enlarged lymph node reasonable?
3) Is it possible that I have HIV?
4) Is my 10 week NEGATIVE HIV result reliable? How reliable?

Thank you, I appreciate your time Dr.
I just want to move on with my life and put this behind me and never look back

Dr. Handsfield and I share the forum.  You got me this time.  FYI, the reason we share the forum is because we have worked together for nearly 30 years and while our verbiage styles vary, we have never disagreed on management strategies or advice to clients.

I reviewed your earlier interchange with Dr. Handsfield.  I'm glad to hear that you got your STD tests, they prove that you did not get STD from the exposure. In addition, as Dr. Handsfield told you, I agree that your chances of getting HIV from condoms protected sex, even when the condom may have slipped down the penis is essentially zero.  Now you have had a negative HIV test 10 weeks after exposure and it was negative too. This proves you did not get HIV from this exposure.  Your sore throat and swollen glands are due to something else - a summer cold of other non-STD sore throat, not HIV.

In answer to your specific questions:
1.  No you do not need further testing.
2.  I can understand why you might be nervous because of your swollen lymph nodes but there is no basis in medical fact to support your concerns.  There is no way this is HIV.
3.  No, you do not have HIV from the exposure you describe.
4.  The test is totally reliable in your situation.

Hope these comments help.  It's past time for you to move on.  EWH
