3 week DNA PCR Test. How accurate?

3 week DNA PCR Test. How accurate?

Hello everyone,

I had sex with a girl i met in a club. I am not aware of her medical status.

I got a DNA PCR Test after 3 weeks and the result was negative.

Everyone has different views about the accuracy of DNA PCR Test.

Check out what these guys say:
http://www.aim-med.org/library/articles/1194641955/

Please comment on the following:

a. What are the chances that i am HV negative if my 3 weeks DNA PCR Test is negative?

b. How accurate is a 45 day HIV antibodies Test (by EIA with Western blot confirmation) after 45 days?

c. What are other STD's i should get tested for and When?

Thanx in advance,
Rajeev

A. it's not and it's not an approved test to diagnose HIV.
B. 3 months is when you can obtain a conclusive negative test result
C. Take that one to the STD forum.

Teak,

Thanks for your comments. Please understand that i including many others know that 3 months is the window period for new generation HIV tests. And we also know that DNA PCR is not an approved test. But you have to understand that there is a reason why this test affered by most of the laboratories. And HIV antibodies develop within some time frame. My question is just for the facts available. In my case, A confirmation Western Blot was also done which was negative too.

I will rephrase my question:

Based on the HIV facts, how many people test positive to a

a.  DNA PCR Test after 21 or 22 days of any exposure?
b.  Western Blot Test after 21 or 22 days of any exposure?

Please understand the situation and try to give as much details as possible.

ThanX !

Rajeev bhai,

We can understand your situation.
Can you tell us what your risk was?

Though i am not an expert or even an amateur by any means, i just asked your risk so that it could be evaluated by the experts here.

Best wishes

Take the correct test at the proper time. It's called an Antibody test.
Western Blot test are confirmative tests.

I used a condom but it slipped and i think a few seconds of expore could be very risky.

Again my question is -:

Based on the HIV facts, how many people test positive to a

a.  DNA PCR Test after 21 or 22 days of any exposure?
b.  Western Blot Test after 21 or 22 days of any exposure?

A. The answers aren't going to change it's an Unapproved test.
B. Not used unless one has a postive positive test to confirm it.

End of discussion.

Teak,

You need to understand the questions. From other posts, i can fiure out that you are against DNA PCR Tests and you are not hepling people with their question on PCR tests. You should understand that we are not promoting these tests.

You should understand that anyone who posts here is very anxious and not in a good mental state. He or she would be very tensed while waiting for the results and as a good human being, we should just try to answer their questions instead of having debates and biased opinions.

Anyways, I got a part of my questions answer from H. Hunter Handsfield, M.D.:

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/HIV-Prevention/DNA-PCR-Testing-Question/show/256089

"time frame for use of the PCR test to detect HIV infection ...............................The idea is to diagnose infections before antibody develops, typically a few days to 2-3 weeks after exposure--and even then, only in much higher risk situations than yours.  At 40 days (6 weeks) you should have just had a standard abtibody test."

You need to understand that PCR-DNA tests are not used to diagnose HIV they are used to monitor the progression of HIV in those that are known to be infected and to monitor their progession on HAART.

Don't confuse PCR DNA test with PCR RNA tests. Big difference.

No because PCR-DNA tests are not diagnostic tests.

Here is what you were refering to to read it and gain some knowledge. Intended USE.

Teak,

I never said that you are wrong. But my question is different.

I got the following test from Labcorp:

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), DNA PCR With HIV Antibodies, ICMA
Test Number: 162050

Lets forget about PCR Test and lets talk about the other antibody test included in this panel.

You have more knowledge than me. Can you guess a percentage or range for people who turn positive after 21 or 22 days using this antibody test?

More information on the test is available on https://www.labcorp.com  (Test Number: 162050)

Are there any figures like 80-85% develop antibodies within 3 weeks or any other figures?

Just trying to calculate the probability/chances of my remaining negative.

Thanks.

The only test you have to be concerned about is at test done at 3 months post exposure to obtain a conclusive test result.

at 28 days if you have the hiv 1/2 antibody test AND the pcr dna test,if you are positive at least one of these will show up. Either you have the genetic material in your blood (after 72 hours since exposure) or you have already sero-converted (in exceptional cases this can take up to 3 months) in which case antibodies will show up.

the incidence of false positive on pcr dna is quite high which is why it is not a favoured diagnostic tool. However it does have a purpose. It is costly though but still will detect the genetic material of the hiv virus in your blood after a certain window since exposure .

There are many many doctors who will tell you that if these tests are neg at 4 weeks there is virtually no chance they will change thereafter.
I tested at 4 (dna /hiv 1/2), 6(hiv 1/2) and 12(hiv 1/2) and was negative all the way through , thank God and thanks to the advice from people on here.

I would advise anyone else to do the same as me. Each negative test is a step towards the alleviation of anxiety.
