3.5 Months Later . . .

Hello, all.  I am a 19-year old heterosexual male.  One night, though, my curiosity got the better of me and I performed and received oral sex on another male who said he was HIV negative.  He did not ejaculate in my mouth, but there was some pre-seminal fluid.  I trusted his word about his status, but then I began to feel great anxiety and guilt over the encounter and I began to worry about HIV.

I waited 8 weeks and then tested negative by an Oral Rapid Test and an ELISA.  Now, 3.5 months after the exposure I am having some oral symptoms that are rekindling my fears.  I developed some canker sores, a tingling tongue, and the taste buds on the tip of my tongue became inflamed and they look like red spots.  I also have a mild, occasional scratchy throat, which I belive is most likely due to work, lack of sleep, and dehydration from work.  I did not notice any spots on my uvula or my throat, and I am trying not to imagine myself into anymore anxiety.  I have had canker sores before, so it is the inflamed taste buds and red spots that are freaking me out.  In any event, a doctor who is not my normal doctor told me not to worry, but it is very hard to clear my mind of this nightmare.

I am trying to post to Dr. HHH, but the forum is constantly full.  I know that symptoms are never a good indicator of HIV,  that my test was at a highly reliable time, that my risk (if at all) was exceptionally low, and that I am well outside of the time frame for ARS.  I am just sick of anxiety and fear.  If anyone has any thoughts about my symptoms, risk of exposure, test results, and if I should test again I would really appreciate it until I can get a post in to Dr. HHH and see my personal doctor once she gets back from vacation.

Thanks everyone, this is a great resource for everyone to use!

P.S.  Does anyone know the actual risk for pre-seminal fluid?  I have heard multiple opinions ranging from "no risk" to "regular oral sex risk" (which I know is very low).

I have these lines on each side of my mouth. I thought it was me biting my jaws while I sleep or something, but they haven't went away in like a month.

It's reassuring to know that there are others out there going through this nightmare.  We should chat!

Often times we have bouts of regular canker sores when we are very stressed and feeling ill from anxiety.  In addition, canker sores most often appear in multiples.  Sometimes, even, one sore will heal an then another sore with open up instantly.  You may even have a viral mouth infection.  That's what happened to me.  I went to my doctor and she said that there's been a local surge of Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease floating around.  So my situation was all a bad coincidence!  If you are feeling worried or unsure, go talk to your doctor and see what they can do to help ease your anxiety and your symptoms.

Almost assuredly not oral herpes (although it's entirely possible, maybe even probable, that you have HSV1). I believe rare, if ever, that it's presented on tongue. I believed I had HSV1 until I took a blood test. I have gotten the 'geographic tongue' as well as angular chelitis before...but not HSV1.

For 2 months now I have been frequently getting mouth ulcers, on the tip of my tongue, inside my lip, back of my throat, but never outside the mouth.  And now i have small smooth red spots on my tongue with random inflammed taste buds.  I took a HIV test and it came back as negative so that not the case, but im afraid that it could be oral herper (hsv-1) and not aphthous stomatitis (canker sores).  Does anyone know if there's a definte way of telling?  Can i get a swab test on the red spots even though there are no ulcers present?  Can acid reflux cause this?

Thank you all so much for your comments, they have really helped ease my mind!  I have had STD tests for all of the major stuff.  A part of this whole fiasco was actually a UTI that I got a few days afterward.  That's what started this whole nightmare.  So, I was on Erythromycin for 10 days, then I was fine.  Then I had a relapse and was on Doxycycline for 10 days.  Then I had another relapse and was on Doxycycline for 30 days and then Fluconazole for 10 days after that.  I tested negative for all the STDs, so now whatever is giving me UTI problems is something that me and my doctor need to isolate.  Aside from that, thank you so much for your HIV help!

Sounds like it could be Geographic Tongue (red spots/inflamed taste buds). Go see your doc about it, but it's not related to HIV. Several of us here have it...no sweat.

You didn't have a risk. Saliva has inhibiting factors. Unless you had a laceration in your mouth you don't have anything to worry about.
