Are Third Generation Elisa Tests always used now?

I recently went to a local public clinic and had an hiv test done. The results came back negative, and when I asked what type of test was used I was told it was a EIA (Elisa).

I asked which generation it was, and the doctor didn't even know!

Can I assume it was third generation?

If you are in the US you have no need to test for HIV2.

Yes at 3 months but they can't tell you which type of HIV.

So then the original assumption that since I took the test in the US it must have been a third generation EIA is, well, wrong?

Yes, the US does not use 4th generation tests.

I'm referring to the third generation, not 4th.

Originally, you stated that since I took my EIA in the US, I can assume it was a third generation.

However, since I was told by my doctor that I was only tested for HIV 1 - it could not have been a third generation since it didnt test for HIV-2, as well.

So now, I'm scratching my head as to which test I took. =/

Yes an ELISA test will pick up antibodies for HIV2 eventhough is does not state HIV2.
