Bleeding

Bleeding

Hi,

Last year i had sex with a Thai sex worker girl in sydney brothel in australia. I wore protection but after pulling out and removing the condom i found that my penis was bleeding from the skin that holds the foreskin to the penis. I dont think the condom split and it was full of blood. A few days later i had a really sore throat.2 months later when i returned to the uk i had flu like symptoms for a day or so.  What are the chances that i could have caught HIV???  I am really worried, after reading of these symptoms of hiv on the internet last week

I am going to get tested and will not be seeing a sex worker in the future after this scare

cheers

Relax.  Since the wound that bled was covered by the condom, there was no significant risk--and the odds are good your CSW partner didn't have HIV anyway.  Forget your symptoms; every symptom caused by HIV is also caused by garden variety viruses - you caught a cold, nothing more. But since you're nervous, have an HIV test.  Since you obviously have sex in other than monogamous settings, you should have an HIV test once a year anyway.  If the exposure you describe is your only potential risk, you can expect a negative result.

And stop searching  the internet for HIV symptoms.  It is a fool's errand.  Few HIV/AIDS websites mention all the other, far more common causes of the same symptoms.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

thanks for your help and prompt reply. I will have a test..

But that is my only potential risk.

What would the risk be in transmission if the condom had split.. as i was very drunk and not too aware of what was going on!!   It is said on this site that it is 1 in 1000 through vaginal sex, but i assume that is if there isnt a cut on the penis!!

many thanks

I cannot estimate the increased risk, but probably not all th at much. But drunk or not, you probably would have known if the condom ruptured.
