Chances of getting infected

by rcurious, Jul 24, 2007 09:37PM
I happed to have viginal sex with a Thai sex worker. For my bad luck and shock i recognised that the condum has reptured. I realised about this only when i pulled out of her.So not very sure how long i got exposed inside the vigina (vagina). This is first and the only time i am having sex with anyone else other than my wife.
3 days after this inscident i started feeling itchy behind my ears, neck sometimes on chest etc. If i itch a mosquito bite like lump appears which will dissappear if i do'nt touch it for long time. I also feel itchy at different parts of the body but if do'nt touch anywhere then no rash appear. Today is the 11th day and i still get this itchy feeling . This is not continiouis but appears often. Ofcourse i am anxsioius and too courious about the ARS symptoms.
I know i have to wait for the testing to really conclude on any openion.
But please give me some inputs on what is the chances that you can get infected on a similar situation like me imagining the sex worker was HIV infected? Does the only one contact will 100 % transfer the infection?. Had it not been tranferred then why this itching feeling and rashes after 3 days from that inscident?. So does it mean that I am already infected ?. Till now i do'nt have fever or any other symptoms. But is this rash alone a positive sigh of infection?
I am normally very healthy and hygenic person. I never had this kind of irritation on skin before. So will this be for sure an ARS . Is there any other chances that I can get similar rashes due to some other infection than HIV?
And the last quetions. Is there any possiblity that you get some STD but not HIV so that you can get treated and cured to get a normal life back?
Please advice .

No it does not sound like ARS. It came on to quick. Yes you can contract an STD and not HIV and you can contract HIV and no STDs or you can contract both at the same time. The only way to know is by testing. Contact your local STD clinic for further advise on testing.

To: Is it a ARS symptom
Is those rash ARS  kind of rash? Is the only reason  that you feel that this is not a symptom because it came fast ? What is the minimum time it would take for showing up such a symptom. Even though i saw some information like within 2 weeks.. what is could be the earlist time in days.

You also did'nt comment on the chances..Is it 100% sure that you get infected if you get sexully exposed to an infected person like my case?

Thanks a lot for the efforts to answer my questions

by Teak, Jul 24, 2007 10:30PM
ARS rash does not itch.  2-4 weeks if one would have symptoms at all. No it is not 100% sure that you would be infected even if the person was HIV positive.

To: Just one more question
I started with an allergy medicine and one for skin irritation medicine yesterday. It is a bit better today. Will ARS kind of rash also get cured by normal allergy medicines?
Sorry to bother you too much with qestion. But I know you very well know the mental state of people like us

by Teak, Jul 24, 2007 11:30PM
An ARS rash will not go away with normal allergy medicines. It will go away when all the other symptoms leave and that is 1-2 weeks. ARS rash is not caused by allergies.

by rcurious, Jul 25, 2007 12:06AM
Does the ARS rash looks like mosquito bite? And will it just vanish automaticall if you do'nt itch or touch it for some time.
Thanks for you time.

by rcurious, Jul 25, 2007 12:09AM
I also notices very small 3 red spots on the right arm 1 on the left . Not itching and no bump. Today i noticed one on the left side of chest too. Does the ARS rash looks like this small red pin spots.

by rcurious, Jul 25, 2007 03:43AM
To: Please comment
As mentioned earlier i also have noticed 3 small red sports on my right arm.The are blood read more like tiny blood spot just under the skin. This spots were observed the 3/4 days after the exposure. There was on visible on the left hand after 6 days. And today after 11 days on one visible on the chest. This is a little bigger than the other though small. Is the ARS rash similar to this red spots.
See normally i do'nt have all this. And this all are seen after the exposure and that is why the consern. I could not find any other reason for this marks other than the ARS.
Please comment on this.

by OrionQuest, Jul 25, 2007 04:25AM
It's very difficult to judge your spots because a) we can't see them and b) they have to be seen by a professional.  Red pin spots sound like what doctors call petechiae or little itty bitty bleeding spots. Now I don't know what can cause that (except for dengue fever) so better ask a doctor in your area.

I've read that ARS rashes are supposed to be maculopapular rash.  Now that means slightly raised and not very small but not humongous either.

by rcurious, Jul 25, 2007 05:24AM
THanks for that information.
I am quite normal . I do'nt have any feaver also. This red spots are more or less flat. It looks like some bleeding spot only. But it is not itchy atall. Are ARS spot also like bleeding spots? The ones i started having from the 3rd day are still there. It did'nt vanish yet. I altogether have 6 spots including the one i had today.

To: rcurious
They look more like hives without the itch. But as you have been told you can not diagnose HIV by symptoms.

by rcurious, Jul 25, 2007 09:14PM
Yes, i do agree. But you know a normal person who normally does not have anything like that after an exposure to HIV would be checking if there is something unusual happening. And this kind of skin marks are not there before. I know anyway i need to wait for the time period till i get tested . And it is very releaving and informative when you get answers for you questions.
One more question. Will this ARS rashes big in size or will be like small black mole size? When you say it maculopapular. Will the bumpiness is very small that it just rises above the skin if the rish is very much like a small dot of the size of a small black mole? Or the bumpiness will be something like a pimple?

Thanks for all the information you are providing. I know i need to wait till i get tested. But you need to get through this period right..

One more question i started seeing 4 marks on my hands from 3 to 4 days after exposure. Yesterday i found one new on the that is the 11tn day on my chest. All this are small ones very red like blood spots.

I regret a lot on my deeds. I have got 3 kids and my wife. I forget all of them for a moment. They are all very loving. Never in my life i will make such a mistake. But feel very guilty.

by rcurious, Jul 26, 2007 03:53AM
To: Jag
Did you also had the similar symptoms as i had?. Many sites i read that the ARS starts only with a feaver and after 2 weeks. But some places i have see people mentioned that they had body itch and saw red spots just after 4 days of exposure.
As i am normally very healthy and does'nt have any skin related issues (even itching) the present things were giving me lots of concern. I could not related the present skin issues to anything else other than ARS. If anyone cacn comment on this i really appreciate this.

by Teak, Jul 26, 2007 04:30AM

I have no doubt that you feel guilty and you should. It's history now and life goes on. If you are unwilling to forgive yourself then how do you expect anyone else to forgive you.

Yep, well, if it makes you feel any better, I've had the tiny red petechiae like dots (not a huge number of them, something like what you're describing though) and some other odd conditions (these can't be called HIV symptoms anymore, I take it) including some itching around, but everyone says my 12 week negative trumps all that. I also think this stuff, not remotely resembling 'classic' ARS symptoms, would have to be coming on much later in infection to be related. Dr. Bob on thebody.com told me my conditions weren't worrisome for ARS or HIV. Anyways, good luck man. You'll be fine.

by OrionQuest, Jul 26, 2007 10:14AM
as long as she has a 12 week neg too!

by Jaguar83, Jul 26, 2007 10:19AM
To: Teak, Mike, Reg.joe
Oh ya, does my 12 wk negative unequivocally mean that I can sleep unprotected with a (known) HIV- girl that I've been with?

by Jaguar83, Jul 26, 2007 10:39AM
Thanks, OQ.

The rest of you guys agree? That'd be the final monkey off my back.

by rcurious, Jul 26, 2007 09:02PM
I know i am at a high risk category compard to any worried well.So any symptom which i could not explain with another other conditions are giving concern.I know that the only way out is to get through this period and wait untill i get tested. But when we feel that the symptoms what was see are not really an ARS related one that gives a bit of comfort and hope.
I will pass my 2 weeks. Now quite anxciouly waiting to see whether i will develop and flu or through infection or any of my red spot on the skin are increaing ....
I pray for everyone in the forum i come accross. I am so worried about the price one have to pay for one mistake done in life...

by rcurious, Aug 07, 2007 02:12AM
It passed now 3 weeks for me. I have not experienced and symptoms like fever,or lymphnodes etc. The rashes i mentioned earlier like the red spots are still there in my hands and one on my chest. They are tiny ones and still remains. It would be now more than two weeks i am having this red spots. At times i get mild head ache that is all.
I am waiting for the 6 weeks period to do me first testing.
This head ache and those spots on the skin are ofcourse worrying me a little.
Will ARS rashes comes without and fever, or can someone have only headache and no other ARS symptoms... ?
I did'nt want to bother all you good people with my questions and was waiting to get the tests done. But you know the mental strengh looses slowly and i felt i should ask you guys for some advice.
Does no ARS symptoms points to a high possiblity of not getting infected ?
I appretiate comments from everyone on this.
Thanks a lot

by exww, Aug 07, 2007 02:29AM
ARS with only headage is not considered as ARS. about 60-80% people get ARS when they exposed. BUT ONLY TEST TELL YOU TRUTH

by rcurious, Aug 28, 2007 12:27AM
I am still waiting to complete 12 weeks for my first test. My second son who is just 17 months had a viral feaver and after the end of this viral feaver he had rashes on the body. The doctor said it is viral fever and the rashes are due to the virus.
I am very nervous now. Will this be the virus he would have got from me (If I am infected). I just have normal life with him like i feed him food, sometimes he eat from my plate, i some time kiss him. etc. I heard that an infected person's saliva will also be having virus. Will this virus be enough to infect a small infact of 16 months. I have read that you won't get infected by saliva but will a small kid can get infected?. I am so upset now and nervous about this situation. Can someone give me some advice.
I am passing my 7 weeks. How assuring it will be if i do a test now? Can someone advice the percentage  of chances that i am not infected if I get a negative test result.

You need to learn how HIV is transmitted. The only way you can give it to your child is by having sex with them. Now did you have sex with them? I don't think so. You don't get it from kissing, food or anything else you can come up with. I'm sure he's not an IV drug user where you shared works with him.

by Daniel25, Aug 28, 2007 05:23PM
rcurious, was the girl you had sex with a GOGO girl or just a freelancer?

by rcurious, Aug 29, 2007 01:47AM
Thank a lot Teak. The worry was just because he just had this feaver during this period of when where I myself am worried of some ARS symptom. And his feaver and rash was confirmed to be from a viral feaver by doctor. And you with the present mind set of mine I am worried about everything.. Thanks a lot for giving me the mental support by providing good advices.
Daniel25- This girl is a sex worker but i met her in pub without knowing that and before sex she told me she is in need of some money. Later after the incident of condum repture i was nervous and asked her whether he is a person with any hiv risk then she told me she is a sex worker and normally gets tested every month.

by Daniel25, Aug 29, 2007 06:58AM
99% of the girls you see the bars in Thailand are sex workers.
Did she tell you that you had to put a condom on?
If so, she's probably fine.

Yes, She did tell me to wear one. My issue was that this got reptured.

I had my first testing done yesterday. This was a rapid test  from the company ABBOTT GmbH Determine HIV. I was seen negative in this test. It passed 51 days when i took this test from the day of my exposure.
I know it is too early a test but still out of curiousity does this result encouraging. Does it increase the probability of me not infected to a higher value.
Someone please give me some openion on this.

If you would have read their sheet it states, that the test my not pick up early exposure. You need to test at 12/13 weeks.

by rcurious, Sep 05, 2007 08:53AM

Yes i would be definitly testing at this time. But many of the threads were commenting that a negative result after 6 weeks are encouraging and giving more probabilty for not getting infected. So i just wanted to check with my kind of exposure can i also count an some more chance of not getting infected.

From you comment Teak can i conclude that this test was indication and just a blunt as any early test. So i still have the same amount of risk as i was having till i get a negative on 13th week ?

Curious, while Teak says 12 to 13 weeks, as well as other people, Dr. HHH says 6 weeks is conclusive. So you really can only get different opinions from this forum.  Considering every website that talks about this issues says 3 months, thats what I would go with. However, my medical doctor and Dr. HHH as well as other people in this forum believe 6 weeks is very accurate. So that negative result you had at about 7 weeks should be very reassuring and you probably shouldnt worry anymore. Just test at 13 weeks again to be absolutely sure. According to Dr. HHH, its hard for a man to get HIV from unprotected vaginal sex with a woman who IS HIV positive. I think its something like 1 in 2000 for 1st time exposure.  Whether its true or not, its giving me a lot of hope. And I also had SO MANY symptoms after my exposure to, and I am now convinced im negative after I was convinced I was positive. Also so many other people on here complain about symptoms and they never end up having HIV.  Hopefully this makes you feel better.

Thanks a lot for that piece of advice.
I do'nt want to shy away from facts. I will definitly be doing test at 3 months and 6 months before I conclude me negative. It is just get a better hope i asked the question after my 7 week test. I just wanted to know whether it is a good hint or just not atall a hint and will have to wait till 3 weeks to get some clarity .

Thanks a lot once again. your advice soothens me a lot. I will be updating my test results here so that atleast i will  be a sample of information for others who are going through the same mental trauma.
All you guys are doing a great job here be helping each other.

I got the 84 days test result. I am negative for HIV 1 and 2 (ELISA). This is a very releaving result. Ofcourse I will be doing a final conclusive test on the 6 month bench mark before i will rule out any possibility of infection.
I also had a test for syphilis which also is negative.
Thanks to everyone for the support provided during the trying time. I wish good luck to all you guys who are going through the trauma. I also pray for all of you.
My exposure was of the high risk category and my results should be an engcouragement for those people who have similar exposure and less.. keep cool and do testing... Just do'nt come to any conclusion with you symptoms. This is what i learned and everyone adviced me too....

Do you really think that it is conclusive. I am waiting to do a test on the 6th month. There is a statement in the result paper which says that hiv has a window period till 6 months and this is a test on the 3rd month. So I was a bit confused as the people who tested itself is putting disclaimer like this then it should be not a conclusive test right..
You are very genuine in your advices and i like it that way. So i will appreciate your comment on this.
