Condom Break

Dear Doctor,

A question: Around 7 weeks ago I had sex with a Dutch 21 yrs old prostitute in Amsterdam, the condom broke, I noticed and with in  like 10 seconds I was out of her, she said she tests often and was clean, but who knows Ofcourse now, the psychological part comes in, and suddenly I experience so called symptoms. I cough for a few weeks, and since a few days have a flew, stuck nose irritated airways. Normally a person never worry's but now I do.

I understood that a condom protects only 85% and found out that the infection risk is 1 out of 2000 resp. 0.05% on heterosexual contact. Is this really true, it seems to low to me.

I would like to get tested after 50-60 days. How reliable are the results then? The test I would do is the antibody test.
Why are the window periods per country so different. One country says 6 weeks another says 6 months. What do you say, when has the 95% timetrame passed?

There are no tests approved to give one a conclusive negative test earlier than 3 months post exposure.

Dear Teak,

I found this post by Dr. Hunter where he says 2 months is enough, how come?
Isn't it like that after 2 months its 96% reliable after 3 months 99% after 6 99.5% and after twelve months 100%, Why else would he, as a leading figure in the STD field say 2 months.

Sincerely.

Relax.  With a negative HIV test 2 months afterward, you can be 100% certain you did not acquire HIV during the sexual encounter you describe.  Sinus symptoms are not like those of acute HIV infection;....
