Confused about the TYPES OF TESTS & GENERATIONS

by kpelych19602, Apr 19, 2009 12:16AM
I understand that an ELISA test looks for antibodies.  I am from the United States.  Does the GENERATION of test matter as to sensitivity?  I know a lot of sites say 6 weeks may be accurate, but would that be with a earlier generation test, or are they talking about newer generations?  (Although I do realize that 12 weeks is conclusive no matter what).  For example, is a generation 3 test a combo ag/ab test?  Or are there generation 3 tests that strictly look for antibodies?  That is what I am confused about.  Are generation 3 and 4 tests generally used in the USA?  Also, what is the difference between a PCR DNA test and a combo ag/ab test?  Sorry for so many questions but I just want to be informed on the newer tests.....I have tried to read as much as I can about them on here and other websites first, but I am really only familiar with the original ELISA tests.....thank you!

You don't have to concern yourself about HIV tests.

I had a low risk exposure but I was concerned, so I took the pcr dna duo from labcorp. At the time I was recovering from sore throat , swollen glands.
to my shock, my icma came back repeated reactive {2.43} with neg. pcr.
and neg. western blot.I retested with quest with an eia., not sure which generation, but it was non-reactive at 8 weeks with neg pcr. i have autoimmune of graves with autoantibodies to hashimotos. Do you think the icma picked up something the eia missed or a false positive with icma? I know you are not a doctor, but I value your opinion, although I don't like your opinion about pcr. Will an antibody test at 12 weeks be conclusive if I use the eia from quest or do you recommend the icma from lab corp. Do you think 12 weeks is adequate for a conclusive result or must I wait 13 weeks?
thank-you in advance for your time
