Conlusive?

Conlusive?

Doc, I understand that PCR tests have false positives.  However, I had a PCR RNA done at 28 and 63 days, both negative.  My questions are:  1)  Since both were negative and not positive, is that conclusive enough, 2)  What is the difference between the RNA and DNA PCR tests and does one detect the virus sooner?  I understand the rule for antibody tests, but I figured that if I did not receive a positive (which could have been a false positive) then two negative PCR RNA NAT results would be conclusive.  Just want some reassurance.

Two negative PCR tests done 1 and 2 months after exposure come to 100% conclusive evidence against HIV.  Most providers also would recommend an antibody test, but it really isn't necessary in this circumstance.

1) Yup, conclusive.

2) The two tests are very similar.  I can't tell you which might be positive sooner, but either one would be positive before 28 days, so it doesn't make any difference.

Consider yourself reassured (as you almost certainly were told by the provider who ordered your tests).  Time to move on.
