Contracting HIV From Kissing

Hi All,

So I had a quick question regarding a situation I just found myself in.  I've always practiced safe sex and have always been a bit of a germaphobe.  Anyway, I'll get right to the point.  Last night, I found myself at a bar and was talking to a woman who was very much into me.  We had both been drinking heavily and when I went to use the restroom, she followed me into the back corridor where the bathrooms were and we started to make out.  Tongue, the whole nine yards.  The entire kiss lasted for literally about 10 seconds.  After she and I had done that, I went back out and one of her friends basically told me that I wasn't the first guy with whom she's done something like that.  Given that information, I can only assume she wasn't the cleanest.  Regardless, nothing other than that kiss happened (e.g., no sex, no oral, nothing).

After I woke up this morning, I went to brush my teeth and noticed that my gum lines had some cuts and were a little bloody.  I don't know what it was from however, (and maybe I'm thinking too much into it), but I couldn't help but think that if this woman did indeed have something like HIV, that if she and I kissed like we did and I had an open cut, couldn't I have contracted this disease?  I don't know if she had an open cut too but I don't think so.  I wasn't tasting blood or anything like that.  Anyway, I'm really nervous because while I don't have a girlfriend, I am kinda seeing someone and wouldn't want to give anyone else something like HIV.  Like I said, no sex, it was just a kiss, but there is a possibility my gums had cuts like they did last night when she and I kissed.  Since we had been drinking, I can't recall if my gums were cut up last night but since they were this morning, I can only assume they were.  It's really causing me a lot of stress right now and any insights into this would be helpful.

Thanks,

Kissing doesn't transmit HIV. You had no risk.

Yeah kissing someone in a bar is just so bad and dirty right? Time to step off the horse.

Kissing is not a risk, no matter what.

Teak and Vance,

Thanks for the feedback.  I actually just read that there's only been one documented case where someone's contracted HIV from kissing.  I just have also read that if you kiss and there is blood present, then HIV transmission can happen.  Like I said, I would've definitely noticed if I were bleeding severely or if she was and that definitely was not the case.  Just wanted to assess my risk if the cuts I noticed this morning were present last night.  I'm not by any means an expert in HIV so I wanted to just get some validation from this community.

That case is not documented and is highly speculative and not accepted in the medical community.

Thanks again for your feedback.  Just curious though about the following information which is provided by the CDC:

http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/qa/transmission.htm

Like I said, my gums were bleeding, I have ZERO idea what this girl has done in her past.  Nothing about me getting off of a high horse, just trying to be safe is all.  I'm assuming it could be possible based on this information.

I've been tested before in the past however, do you think it'd be worth it to get tested from this single encounter?  Or am I just worrying needlessly?

"There is no risk to you associated with the exposure you describe. We get many questions about kissing and oral exposure and whether or not the presence of a cold sore, bites to the lip, gum disease or other wounds in or around the mouth changes the answer to the question.  The answer is no.  The data which define the absence of any risk of getting HIV through kissing, deep or otherwise has be generated through studies of thousand and thousands of persons, some of whom had cold cores, cuts, etc.  There is no risk.  this is the case even if she was HIV infected or had had oral sex with someone who had HIV immediately prior to your encounter with her "
