Cream /oil based lubricants when using condoms

Hi,

I'm a gay 25 male. I had sex with a man last night and we used protection. We are both HIV negative and he tells me he was tested three weeks ago by his private doctor, and is also tested regularly. He used lubricant that wasn't quite the normal water-based type, but it was an oil based kind. It says on the label to not use it for condoms, but he didn't know that at the time and neither did I. (You would think he'd read the label.)

My question is, I know it's always best to use water based lubricants, but since it wasn't used this time around, am I at a risk of possibly contracting HIV (even tho he says he's negative, but I treat everyone as if they were) or the condom breaking? What are the reasons for not using oil based and the risks associated with it?

**FYI - The condom did not break and we only had sex for 5 minutes**

oil based lubricants can damage the integrity of a condom and set up the potential for condom failure.
