Do I need to re-test for HIV? Scared, please help!

Hi there,

I started having unprotected sex with my ex-boyfriend on the 25th March 2016. He would pull out before he ejaculated when we had sex. At the beginning of April (2016) I started feeling unwell so I went to the doctors on the 10th of April and was diagnosed with tonsillitis. I was treated with antibiotics and it went away. I was going through a very stressful period in my life and was smoking (never smoked in my life before) and drinking heavily which started around January so I thought this may have caused the tonsillitis.

In May I got a bad urine infection and it turned out my ex had given my chlamydia. I last had sex with him on the 19th May 2016. I started freaking out about HIV because I know tonsillitis is a symptom. On the 26th June 2016 I got a rapid HIV test and it was negative. I told the doctor everything, she seemed unconcerned and said it was unlikely I would have it. After the test was negative she did not tell me I needed re-tested. I have been doing research and it states the test needs to be done after 12 weeks?

Its been over a year now and I'm totally freaking out. I'm so scared, I'm even too anxious to go and get another test. I'm paralyzed with fear. What are the chances I have it? Do you think I need to get tested? I'm so scared because of the tonsillitis I had back in April, and that is a symptom.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated!!!!

There is nothing to worry about.
Symptoms are not used by HIV doctors to diagnose so you shouldn't study them and worry either. Anyone can get tonsillitis, so that didn't prove anything. Your test was conclusive so your doctor is correct and you can move on from HIV.

Thank you for your reply. Do I not need to get checked again though because the time I last had sex with him and the time I had the test was only 5 weeks and 4 days later?
The expert doctors we use say 28 days is conclusive so you are fine.
Thank you for your reply, much appreciated.
