) with a woman who worked in a strip club without using protection. Her and I both discussed in great detail about being disease free prior to intercourse
given she had a baby recently and would have been tested for STDs and AIDS as part of giving birth to her child. She was also very concerned about contracting something from me, which I recently tested and all was negative. She made that very clear the next day when she text me saying "...I really hope you didn't give me anything". Leads me to believe she was very concerned as well.
On Dec 29th (18 days after being with her), I went in to be fully tested for all STDs as I do every 6 months since I'm sexually active. They completed an ELISA test which came back positive. They did the Western Blot which came back negative. DR requested I be tested again in 2 months. For reassurance, I requested the RNA testing which I should hear back soon (blood drawn for test 5 Jan 09). I've had no symptoms.
My concern is the false positive being an indication of exposure since I'm in the "window period" and the ELISA was done just 2.5 weeks after a possible exposure. How concerned should I be that the RNA will come back positive since the ELISA was positive and the Western Blot was negative, but ELISA and Western Blot was done so early after the possible exposure? How accurate is the ELISA and Western Blot test 18 days from exposure date and is a "false positive" for ELISA any indication of an early syptom (symptom) of being Positive?
I'm very concerned and have been in tears a few times worring about all of this. After all she's a stripper and no telling how much truth was in what she was saying....
Thanks for answering the question about breast milk, however that was the least of my concern...I'm more concerned about the other things I mentioned in my post. But I greatly appreciate your feedback.
You had unprotected sex and hence you needed HIV test, which was ELISA positive after 18 days, but Western Blot was negative (ELISA was done quite early after the possible exposure). If your RNA test is negative, it will go in favour of a false positive ELISA.
I would strongly recommend seeing an HIV physician, who will organise further tests to clarify it. In the mean time, you should avoid sexual activities.
It is possible that it was a false positive ELISA, but it needs confirmation.
Never tested HIV "positive" before. But I have tested "false positive" for RPR (Syphillis (syphilis)) since 1991 when I returned from the Gulf War.
Have had extensive testing and doctors concluded that I was bitten by a bug that gave me anti-bodies for tick or lyme disease (never had symptoms) which causes me to test false positive for syphillis (syphilis). I test negative for the more accurate syphillis (syphilis) test (FLUORESCENT TREPONEMAL ANTIGEN ABSORPTION TEST) and have never tested positive for that test.
What bugs me is my doctor (who is a General Practicioner but she consulted an infectious disease specialist), stated I should be considered negative for now because the western blot was negative. They recommended re-testing in 2 months, but as we all know waiting that long is like having your hand on a hot stove. I pushed her to submit the RNA test which I hope to have the results in the next few days. It is my understanding that the RNA test is very accurate in the first 2-3 week period of the possible exposure.
