HIV Antigen and antibody tests

If you got tested at 42 days (5-6th week) after exposure with an HIV antigen and antibody test and comes out all negative, is it unnecessary to take the 12th week test?

Current methods for the detection of HIV may not detect all infected individuals. An ARCHITECT HIV Ag/Ab Combo test result that is nonreactive does not exclude the possibility of exposure to or infection with HIV-1 and/or HIV-2. Nonreactive results in this assay for individuals with prior exposure to HIV-1 and/or HIV-2 may be due to antigen and antibody levels below the limit of detection of this assay.

UK testing guidelines.
Post-test discussion

The need for a repeat HIV test if still within the window period after a specific exposure should be discussed. Although fourth generation tests shorten the time from exposure to seroconversion a repeat test at three months is still recommended to definitively exclude HIV infection.

Hi TheoRN,

I saw one of your previous posts and was appalled that you used blood donation as a smoke-screen for having a hiv test.

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/HIV-Prevention/Blood-Donation-screening-negative-for-HIV--Syphilis-and-HepBC/show/1351497?personal_page_id=1796580#post_6172268

I am hoping that i made a mistake about my interpretation of that post. Because if it was true, then you were potentially putting the life of someone else in danger, intentionally.

To help with your question, the doctors in the experts' forum advise that the antigen/antibody duo test is very very accurate when done beyond 4 weeks.

However, in this forum, the conclusive test is still a test at 3 months. You have had a real risk with unprotected anal intercourse. Hence, if you are afraid, you can take a test at 3 months to be sure.

May God bless
