HIV DUO Ultra Test at 21 Days

HIV DUO Ultra Test at 21 Days

Hello doc,

I was on business trip to tokyo where i had a potential exposure on 06th march 2008 , i went to massage parlour and was drunk and had penetrative sex i did insist on condoms but by the end of the act the condom was'nt there. I was worried and got myself tested on 21st day with HIV DUO ULTRA VIDAS Based assay, everything came out to be negative the antigen level antibodies were not detected, however as i read through different forums they say 21st day test is not conclusive enough, however i have read to acquire HIV at one play chances are around 0.09% which is 1/1000 ( My act was not more than a minute), i am not sure whether she was infected or no as she spoke only japanase, but leaving that apart does HIV DUO ultra at 21st day look promising or it is not conclusive at all ?, Please advice as i am really worried and get no proper sleep, Thanking you very much in advance,

12/13 weeks tests are conclusive,, 6-8 weeks are reassuring but 21 days (3 weeks) is bit too early to determine, still directionally and in an indicative manner, you may take it as a good suppot for you, because not everyone gets HIV in a aingle event of unprotected sex.

Thank you for your reply, sorry but i am not trying to argue here, i did go through lot of websites informing about various test available in the market which shorten the window period specially HIV DUO ULTRA which also detects the antigen level and can be effective by 3-4 weeks and 99.8% accurate at 28 days is that not true ?

I was of the opinion that antibody test is the recommended test for primary screening. Antigen tests are for blood donation purpose, request other knowledgeable like Teak, Lizzie, Nursegirl, Joggen to comment please

A conclusive negative test even for a DUO test is 3 months post exposure.

My understanding is that 3 weeks after exposure, at least 90-95% of people with new HIV infections would have a positive result on at least one of the 2 components of the Duo test (P24 antigenCea
Histocompatibility antigen test
Hla-b27 antigen
Psa or antibody by ELISAElisa
Elisa/western blot tests for hiv
Lyme disease antibody).  But that doesn't mean there is a 5-10% chance you have HIV.  If you are a male and had vaginal sex with a broken condom, the odds are very strong that you did not catch HIV.

You don't need to wait 3 months.   A negative antibody test at 6 weeks will be 100% proof you didn't catch HIV.  For more information, read any of a few hundred threads on this forum about time to positive HIV test results.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

There are no HIV tests marked to give anyone a Conclusive negative test earlier than 3 months. Are you in the UK?

UK National Guidelines for HIV testing. http://www.bhiva.org/files/file1031097.pdf

How often to test?
Repeat testing should be provided for the following groups:
1. all individuals who have tested HIV negative but where a possible exposure has occurred within the window period

The need for a repeat HIV test if still within the window period after a specific exposure should be discussed. Although fourth generation tests shorten the time from exposure to seroconversion a repeat test at three months is still recommended to definitively exclude HIV infection.
