HIV and Oral

by worried415415, May 13, 2008 06:39PM
Hi,

Many people ask this question: Can I get HIV from oral sex?

There are several answers to this that contradict each other. For example in this forum, everybody says it is a safe activity and no risk whatsoever. However CDC suggests something else. They say "Yes, it is possible for either partner to become infected with HIV through performing or receiving oral sex. There have been a few cases of HIV transmission from performing oral sex on a person infected with HIV. While no one knows exactly what the degree of risk is, evidence suggests that the risk is less than that of unprotected anal or vaginal sex." and they even give several reasons for that.

When I was searching on google, I was not able to find a single article that says oral sex is safe. I just wanted to know what do you guys think of this? Is there a risk? No risk? How to validate this claim? I am sorry if I am being very straight but I think this is something that everybody wants to know.

Thanks

I read this and I understand that there is a risk but negligible. However when in this forum the people are asking questions about oral and the risk of catching hiv, the answer is always "zero". And if you look at the article, it says that it is difficult to study this because you cannot be sure that those people who claim they only had oral exposure, were also involved in other high risk activity. So it is something really confusing. I myself was involved in an unprotected oral with someone recently and I am just so stress.

If it was risky enough to be of value and detectable there would be stats on it juts like there are solid stats about the other ways to transmit the virus. Oral carries such a low risk you can almost forget about it. The docs over in the expert forum say the chance of catching HIV from giving oral is something like 1 in 20 or 40 thousand, and thats assuming the person you are giving oral to is indeed HIV+. Those odds are low low that its you can pretty much forget about it.

That said, if it bugs you so much feel free to go get tested, cant hurt to get tested anyway. Its good to get a test every now and then anyway. I get them about every year.

Thank you man. I had my yearly test in January and it was negative. I probably will not bother to go for another one now. The risk is low. I just wanted to make sure and see what is your take on this.

i think you just answered your own question, in your first post. Is there a risk in receiving? No.  Is there a risk performing oral? Yes though very minimal.
