HIV testing at 12 weeks?????

Hi guys and gals, I had a quick question. I've read through a number of these threads where the doctor states that a negative test at or about 7-8 weeks is pretty conclusive. If this is the case, then why do some places require testing out to three months, and others out to 6 months? My HIV testing history is as follows: 29 days after encounter, I had a negative HIV DNA PCR. 12 weeks (84 days) after encounter, I had a negative antibody test and a negative NAT (nucleic acid amplification) test. Should I have waited till 90 days or is a negative result at 84 days pretty conclusive?

Also, I never got tested for HIV-2. My encounter was with an asian pros. Is HIV-2 something I should really be concerned about? What about other subtypes of HIV-1? Thanks

There is little to nothing that would distingush an 84 day test from a 90 day test - both are conclusive. This confused me as well when I was testing, because some doctors say 12 weeks while others say 90 days. In this case, they mean the same thing. Your test was conclusive, and you are HIV free!

BTW, depending on circumstances, the doctor here, who I trust, says that a 6 week test is conclusive.

I have yet to be tested im on my 7th week of waiting now and the worry and anxity levels are through the roof!  But i can tell you tommy that here in the UK (sorry im not sure where you are in the world) that 12 weeks is conclusive.  And to reassure you on 2 accounts - the doc HHH says 6-8 weeks is conclusive AND again here in the UK i asked if i went for a test at 10 weeks and shows negative will it be the same at 12 - the GUM Clinics answer 'off the record' yes as 2 weeks difference means very little to nothing.  So in my eyes your negative is as good as gold!

Stay safe!

P.S Nearly all modern day tests no matter what they are check for both types 1 and 2
