Hello,

If I go for testing at 6 weeks or 3 months, do I need to ask  my doctor to order a 4th Generation test (which I believe is the most sensitive and can be used to detect HIV at 6 weeks or prior)? Or, do I need to investigate myself by calling the hospital lab to ask them the generation of the testing? Is the Generation of testing the actual equipment that they use to test the blood?

I've been told that I'm not at risk but my worrying is overwhelming.

Move along, there are no tests marketed or sold to give a conclusive negative test earlier than 3 months post exposure.

Not much difference between 3rd and 4th generation tests. Both can be considered conclusive at 6 weeks.

One  more thing. Let me remind you that based on the medical protocol testing is needed once a year if you are sexually active  and after the window period if you are exposed to the virus . As you have already been advised Hiv can only be transmitted through:
-unprotected vaginal or/and anal penetration
-from mother to child
-by sharing drug works.

You are welcome. You can just ask about the kind of test you will take.
Please keep in mind though that for a totally conclusive result you can confirm the negative result of a 4th generation test , at 3 months after your last exposure.

Thanks for the information. How do I know if a 4th generation test is what the hospital lab will be doing? What if it's a 1st or 2nd generation test, etc.? Are ht results still conclusive at 3 months?

You never had an exposure and don't need testing.

Hello,
A 4th generation test is accurate at 4 weeks after your last exposure and remain accurate then. Please kep in mind though that for a totally conclusive result you can confirm the negative result of a 4th generation test , at 3 months after your last exposure.
