Herpes Labialis, oral sex and HIV

by Afraid2228, Mar 25, 2008 06:57AM
Hi everybody,
I read that genital herpes can increase risk of HIV-transmission because fluids coming from the lesions contain big amounts of not only HSV but also HIV.
Now I'm worried about Herpes on the lips. My ex-partner used to have Herpes labialis outbreaks quite often, and since I already have had HSV myself I was not worrying to much about kissing him while having outbreaks on his lips. I know that salvia sort of inactives HIV, so I'm not afraid HIV could be transmitted by kissing under those conditions.
The only thing is, that I'm not sure if he might have had an acute Herpes labialis outbreak while performing oral sex on me. Would the fluids coming from a fresh herpes labialis lesion be sufficient to transmit HIV to me while receiving oral sex?
Thanks a lot for your help, I'm really scared at the moment.

You risk is at best low.....your partner should worried more than you regards to HIV, cos if he had outbreak, it would be consider open sores.....hahaha...

I would say no risk for HIV, but herpes, yes.

Hmm....anyway, do you how  difficult it is to perform oral sex when one is suffering from actue oral herpes outbreaks......

Thanks a lot!
I'm not even sure, if my ex-partner is positive....
Do you think I should get tested on HIV?

Well, I recommend all sexually active people should have a full STD screen at least once or twice a year. A full STD screen includes an HIV antibody test.

But if you refering to this one time oral sex incident.....nope, for HIV.

Yes, that was the only thing I was worried about. I had no other contacts.
Thanks again!
