How are people getting HIV?

All I read on this site is how the chances are sooo low to get it in a variety of different circumstances, but how are 14,000 people a day getting this horrible disease? Granted I know most happen in Africa but look at these numbers I crunched and let me know if you think things need changing.
I live in Korea so I'm using it as an example. (there are no injection cases here cause no drugs are present so it is purely based on sex)

50 million people in Korea (Average people getting HIV in a day is 2 people)
300,000 people a day visit sex palours
500,000 sex workers work in Korea (room salons, brothels and so on)
appox 30,000 people have HIV in Korea 1/8 of that proportion is women
being generous lets say 6,000 Sex workers have HIV (OVERLY generous cause most of the women are wives of the men that have it)

Ok so 6,000/500,000 = 1% of sex workers have HIV

1% of 300,000 = 3,000 (this many people are having sex with people who are HIV positive)

Factor in condom usage which is pretty high especially with sex workers lets say 50% again under estimating cause I don't understand how people are getting it.

so 1,500 people are at potential risk and perhaps 1 will get it cause there is a 1 in 2000 chance of obtaining HIV from a person with HIV during vaginal intercourse.

Then it may get passed on to the wives or through homosexual contact. But I greatly exaggerated  all my stats in order to come up with this Value.

How are people getting this diseases if the odds are always in your favor?

On average how much of the World population is having sex a day? (percent value)

I came to this site to find some help and comfort. For the most part I see that many came for the same reason, got educated out of worry and concern for their own health, some have since been teted and confirmed negative and now visit the forum to help others..all a worhty cause. Regardless who you all say you  "really" are, who will ever know the truth of your story, bottom line PLEASE stop the debates on these forums, I know that is not your motivation for being here or what got you here to begin with...agree to disagree...go to a chat room or something if needed.

"And yes, I'm sure you got HIV some noble way, in the line of duty, saving other lives.  Give us all a break. "

gee and here I thought I was the only one who thought this.

1. Paramedic for 34 years (at 18 years of age.how does that work?)
2. no ARS symptoms (even though thebody says up to 90% get ARS and most do get it)
3. HIV from bone laceration or blood spatter to the eyes even though bathouses were a Saturdaynight out. (there is a catagory for this in the town Teak lives as there are alot of cadavers with hiv there)
4. Longterm non progressor (what are the odds?)
5. Seen many test positive after 6 -8 weeks (even though any real expert says they have never seen it after 4 weeks.)
6. Seen alot of hetero men getting hiv from vaginal sex. (even though the CDC says less than 5% of total cases are caused by this and even though most experts I have ever read or talked to say the opposite)

The odds are just that - the probability that one is infected.
HIV is not an easy virus to catch and the odds are such that unless one had receptive anal intercourse with a high-risk partner the probability of such a person being infected after a one-time sexual encounter is extremely low.  Therefore I tell such people that they are probably negative.

This does not mean however that people shouldn't test.  All sexually active people should periodically test for HIV.

Ok guys I know where the name calling statred but come on, its getting ugly. Lets move on. I do like discussion but no one knows how and why HIV got to a person. Also lets face it, no one even knows if the HIV part is TRUE. We are just nameless people on a computor.

Regardles of what the F@ck you have seen on this site! Everyone on here (Guiltnworry, Regularjoey, Teak, Chris, dumbo, and myself) has said test, if there was unprotected anal/vaginal. So no one on here messes with statistics. Unprotected vaginal/anal is a risk and needs testing! Regardless if they are gay/straight, black/white, male/female. No one on here will disagree with that, which might be a first.

the numbers for people who get HIV from vaginal sex are about 1 in 1000 & for anal its about 1 in 200 ....
i dont see any of you rreally telling anyone on this site that you think they have HIV, you say the odds are on there side.... and i guess if you think they have it you say just go get tested.
but since i have read on the forums that most people here are just freaked out...

how do youz know that people posting the comments arnt that unlucky 1 in 200 or 1000?

is there some type of trend or somthing ou see in the backround in peoples questions that you dont believe they have it? or is it really just people with bad habits and are unsafe all the time that usually get it?

I think that we both know Teak is aware of the fact that he got HIV from irresponsible sexual practices, hence the reason all he said was LOL to the last post, like a child.  He is clearly uncomfortable with this after 20 some odd years.  How many "cadavers" do paramedics deal with?  I mean, as a medical student, I dealth with a good number, and never got a "bone laceration".  Paramedics, cadavers, really?  Also, if this was a cadaver donated for medical purposes, it would have been thoroughly tested for all infectious diseases, including HIV.  If positive, it would have been rejected and returned to the family, as per the standards of all US medical schools and organ/cadaver donation programs.  This is federally mandated, so unless Teak was snatching bodies, it is unlikely that his so called cadaver passed HIV along to him.

" Clearly, you are still bitter and uncomfortable with your own situation.  If I may comment: on one post several weeks/months ago, you said you don't know how you got HIV.  I find this hard to believe since in a subsequent post, you admitted to unprotected topping of other men in your past"

finally someone else who sees the lies.  As I mentioned in prior posts, even people at aidsmeds basically say people who claim they were only tops are liars.  Go and read for yourself.  there are many replies to this effect.  Teak (or aka Rapidrod at aidsmeds) would never say this there as he knows full well his "peers" would call him on it.

And since you were not around then, Teak also claimed it could have been from bone lacerations he received from cadavers somehow.  I always questioned how there could be so many HIV infected people in a small town of around 2500 people?  Seems awfully strange especially since he is openly gay and attended bathouses in the 80's both obvious high risk lifestyles and well documented as high risk for hiv infection.  Does the CDC have a cadaver/bone laceration category in the surveillance data?....maybe in the town teak comes form they do since there are so many infected people there.

You did not need to explain anything to anyone here.  There is not one person on this board, or planet, who has not done wrong or something they are not proud of.  Most everyone with a conscience feels they "deserve" to be punished for whatever they have done.  If that is true, hell will be a very very bad place for me as I have not always been a Saint. :)

Learn from it and move on and do the best you can.  And keep your posts coming.

Hey guys, thank you all for defending me against Teak.  Although I do not feel the need to justify my questions to Dr. HHH, I will anyway, since Teak seems to have brought it up, albeit unfairly.

I had unprotected sex for the first and only time during the encounter I described in my original post.  I did become pregnant, and while I am not proud of it, I was in no position to have a child, so I had an abortion.  It took a while for me to be able to say that outloud, but I am ok with it now.  The same thing happens to lots of women every year and there is some comfort in knowing that.  I don't regret what I did, but I do regret having unprotected sex.  I posted to Dr. HHHs forum because I, like (most) of you, know that HIV causes gynecological issues in women.  I wanted to know if it would be causing gynecological issues as early as two months after an unprotected encounter.  This is nowhere in the literature because many people cannot pinpoint when they were infected and count the time to the exact appearance of their gynecological symptoms.  Also, there is a wide range of gynecological issues that HIV positive women face, mostly because so many of them are also infected with HPV.  I was unsure if my abnormal pap smear could have been caused by HIV so soon after a potential exposure.  Coupled with this, I felt very guilty about what I did, both having unprotected sex and the abortion, and I suppose I was thinking I deserved to get something to be punished.  I didn't tell anyone about the abortion for the first 8 months, but I finally confided in one of my best friends and got that weight off my chest.

So, to you Teak, I say that you are rude, ignorant, and unsensitive.  I am fine with what you asked and it didn't hurt me because I have come to terms with myself and what happened.  Clearly, you are still bitter and uncomfortable with your own situation.  If I may comment: on one post several weeks/months ago, you said you don't know how you got HIV.  I find this hard to believe since in a subsequent post, you admitted to unprotected topping of other men in your past, I hope before you knew your status.  So I say to you: If you were really as smart and knowledgeable as you say, why can't you put two and two together and figure out that that is the most likely way you got HIV.  Oh, maybe you got it from putting in a trach tube or saving someone from cardiac tamponade, but I highly doubt that.  Please be more tactful and mature in your posts to everyone, you are fast losing credibility.

Again, thanks everyone else for all your support.

I won't argue when we get more people on here with an actual medical back ground, that actually knows what they are talking about. Please, if she had any type of medical background she would have known the answers to her questions

Teak, what in the world do you mean?  Even a person well versed in HIV does not rule out the emotional trama of potentially getting themselves infected. I have a very good working knowledge of HIV and probably could get 100% on a test to be an Aids councilor. That however did not stop me from flipping out and loosing all my rational. You really should understand that basic fact if you truly have a desire to help. That's why most on the board are called WW's

That's BS, most GPs and OBGYNs know almost nothing about HIV.

Dork???  No wonder you are still using high school lingo - that's exactly your level.  I bet you still call people in glasses "four-eyes"...

What you are saying is just plain dumb.  Her questions were not trivial and she had a point in asking an expert his opinion.  Most doctors would not know about the possible intricate gynecological issues with HIV - so she decided to check with Dr.H.  You have no right to insult her just because she has her own worries.  Dumbo is right, you're a sick coward.

I just read guiltnworry's post to Dr.HHH and if you are referring to her "little problem" as the result of her sexual encounter you are one sick fck.  You are sick and need help for more than the aids problem you have.  You would never talk like this to someones face. I guarantee it.  Never!!!   How do I know you never talk like this to someones face?  Well it's simple.  You can still walk and talk.
