sgr,

You know, your questions are all very specific and VERY valid for a person newly infected with HIV.

First thing I would ask is what city are you in?  Your city might have some very good HIV specialists/doctors you might want to speak with and who can monitor your CD4 levels and talk to you about medication.  A lot of people don't start medication right away unless CD4 levels drop too low, but I would recommend some basic homework if you're newly infected, that way you might be able to get more out of your meetings with your doctor.

Thebody.com has an AWESOME site on HIV information, AIDS, risks, medication, etc.  It is run by an HIV-infected doctor based in San Francisco and there is actually a section there that says.."Newly Infected".  I've pasted the link for you here..http://www.thebody.com/.

This forum, HIV Support, is mislabeled, in my opinion, and should be titled HIV Forum and Discussion, as it is reserved for people who think they're risks for acquiring HIV might be elevated enough to warrant discussion of it.  They should have an HIV Support forum on here for people with HIV, but sadly they don't and hopefully that will change soon.  But the best thing for you is to first read that site thebody.com and know it well as they are the most abreast on HIV and AIDS and medication than any other site that I have seen. Also seek out an expert on HIV, not just an ID doctor per se, but someone who knows HIV inside and out.

And the answer to one of your questions, is 24 years on average.  there was a story that says that most people living with HIV have a life expectancy of 24 years.  But I would surmise that will change with the new cocktails of drugs in the pipeline and different therapies (gene therapy) that will definitely come available in the coming few years.  So you probably will live a LONG and happy life, but let me know if you need help. Maybe I can find some resources for you if you cannot find them in your city.

Again, I think this forum is misnamed. It is NOT an HIV support forum... it's an HIV anxiety support forum.

Monkeyflower, relax.  Maybe direct the person to the right place instead of jumping on them.  Didn't you tell me to relax about donations?  Well, relax about this forum's name.

To the original poster, you may be better off going to thebody.com or aidsmeds.com both of which are run by people with HIV and can help you better than this forum/website.

I too believe this forum is misnamed, and agree with Monkeyflower (who was, to the previous poster, only stating an opinion on the proper naming of the forum, NOT hassling the original poster). Given the name, I am surprised more questions like this are not posted.

Sgr, it looks as if several posters have directed you to excellent resources for the HIV positive person, so I have nothing more to add. Good luck to you.

I just emailed MedHelp, asking if they would consider changing the name to reflect the reality of this forum. Hopefully they will :-)
