If you believe you have been exposed to HIV and want help to judge your risk, would like advice about HIV testing, or have questions about the effectiveness of condoms or risks associated with specific sexual practices, this is the site for you.
It's not unheard of for these tests to yield false positives. The test should have been followed up with a standard Western Blot.
Anyway, you didn't have a risk, giving a hand job is not a risk for HIV infection. It did not get into the cut. Would you really have given someone a handjob if you were actively bleeding? I doubt it. Anyway, HIV does not survive long outside the body, so you're safe as houses.
If you had a real risk, ie unprotected vaginal or anal sex, then you'll need to test at six weeks and 12 weeks for conclusive results.
But if all you're worried about is the handjob, you don't have HIV.
Relax:)
To: Thanks for replying to me & here is some more info
Thanks for writing to me. I feel it was low risk too, but still scary when he sees 1 faint line on the stick and then does the quick assure blood drop one and says he sees a faint line with his mini flash light. Oh and if this matters at all which I hope it does, I wasnt giving him a handjob. He tried penetrating me without a condom and I said not without a condom and reach down to stop him and thats when it got pre semen in the little cut on my hand. In the winter right around the cuticles I will get these small cracks and they get dry and a little bit bigger before getting better. The doctor said they get chapped from the winter. I remember being a kid and having the same thing happen even if I wore mittens. Almost looks like a paper cut in the corners so to speak. It got in there, and the pre semen was pretty fresh. The person at the AIDS hotline told me that the highest concentration of HIV is in semen. I asked them as well if the protected sex I had was risky if at best and they said nothing is 100%. I do not think the condom leaked. I saw no leaks. Now if going back 8 months ago with my behind my back promisicuous ex (he was a swinger behind my back and I caught him) I had sex with him once and the condom broke. 3 months later I was negative and thats why I cant understand why the QuickOraAssure could be poz now with a faint poz line and another he could see using a small flashlight. Then he sends another mouth one from the cheek not gums this time off for testing to be sure. The day I had it done he said the quickassure tests are near 100% accurate and that any meds or sinus infection I had could not alter the test. Then yesterday I went back and asked if he could explain things better or reasssure me and then he says that my meds or sinus infection draining could have thrown the test off. I cant get a straight answer from him so I am going to my regular doctor today for this to get a real blood test and also because my throat gland hurts on the right side from my sinuses from draining. This would have to heppen during a week when I am already sick and make me even more frightened! With HIV both sides of the throat glands would hurt wouldnt they and not just one side or not neccesarily? I used to be in nursing before I became disabled in my back and neck from a car wreck and I am 38 and I used to help take care of AIDS patients. So for all of you out there that have it, you have my prayers to live a long life and they find new meds for you. Now I ask for your prayers that my tests come back neg as I am a single/disabled Mom of 4 and I am all they have. Bless you all and please write me some more.
'The person at the AIDS hotline told me that the highest concentration of HIV is in semen'.
That's simply not true. The highest concentration is in blood.
Look there was no risk. None at all. Many other things can cause false positives. You shouldn't have ran another OraQuick, your test should have been verified by a Western Blot.
I think you need to change doctors. Look, you used to treat AIDS patients. You should be educated on all of this. There is no way in hell that you got infected in the manner that you describe. You would have to have had a gaping wound and your partner's penis would have had to penetrate that wound for transmission to take place, and that's assuming your partner was HIV +. You don't know for sure.
You are overreacting. This was not a HIV situation. Find another doctor. I think the guy your going to at the moment has little knowledge of HIV.
To clear your mind, go to a doctor and have a proper ELISA (non-rapid antibody) test. Any preliminary positive result from the ELISA will be confirmed with Western Blot before they would ever tell you that you were HIV+.
Based on your exposures and testing history, you are almost certainly negative. Don't panic about the 'faint line' on the rapid test; just get a formal ELISA (by venipuncture) to confirm your HIV- status.
It wasnt my doctor it was a walk in HIV testing clinic. And I agree I do not think that he was as knowledgeable as he should have been. I was just in nursing as a nurse's aide. I held the hand of a 19 yr old boy who was crying because he was sad for us that we had to gown up before entering his room. He caught HIV from straight sex and that was 12 years ago. He died that next week. He was only full blown for a few months. I wasnt taught about it as an aide I was just there for care and comfort measures. And as you know we know alot more now then we knew then on the subject. I did go to my regular medical physician today and they drew blood for the Western Blot. I will get the result in 2-3 days tops. I will let you all know my result. Thanks for writing to me.
I was told by the guy at the HIV clicnic that the higher concentration was in the pre-semen that comes out rather the whole ejaculation. I wasnt reffering to the blood per my post. He said that pre-semen is the highest concentration and that is what entered the little open cuts on my hand.
That guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
The study hasn't been done that would determine is there a higher concentration of HIV in pre-semen than semen. And he should be ashamed of himself. You weren't at risk dearie.
Even if there was a higher concentration of the virus in pre-***, it still wouldn't matter. SUFFICIENT amounts of the virus must enter the host's bloodstream in a hospitable environment, i.e., inside the body. Your sexual episode happened outside the body. And HIV does not survive long outside the body.
I'm with your doctor on this. You'll be fine. That guy at the testing facility was acting irresponsibly, citing a risk where there clearly was none.
One final point; you are basing all your assumptions on the likelihood of your partner having HIV. The odds of that were also very low. This wasn't a HIV situation and I guarantee you that, based on the evidence you provide, you will test HIV negative:)
I wanted everyone to know that I got the results of my Elisa and western Blot and they were negative. SimX what was your result? Dobbler the reason why I questioned what happened to begin with was his own friend told me had been smoking crack after the fact. Thats what worried me in the first place. Thanks to all who posted to me and I will be back on here to say hello to some of you.
