on my thumb nail, as well as a slightly larger lunula on my right thumb compared to my left thumb (Is this normal?). I also noticed some numbness at the writers grip ie between thumb and middle finger
(I am a grad student and I write a ton). Internet searches generated lots of info relating my symptoms to trauma on nail, proximal subungual oncho etc Since PSO is a sign of immunodef, I continued searches on signs of HIV
The next day I went to get my nails done and the lady accidentally chopped of a bit of my cuticle on the right thumb with the white spot on it. The nail fold was slightly swollen the next morning but I decided to have my sister ( a nurse) take a look at it as I was flying home for the holidays that morning 12/24/07.
On christmas day I came down with diarrhea. I became nauseated and the diarrhea occurred shortly after meals. I took imodium (immodium) 3days into the diarrhea. By Day 4 ie 12/29/2007--there was no diarrhea, just nausea and swollen nail fold. Since I was out of state, I went to the ER to be checked out--where I was given fluids, cephalexin for my swollen nail and famotidine for the nausea.
By 12/31/07 I felt better and had alcohol to ring in the New year at a party. My diarrhea came back the next day. I was again nauseated and flew back for school on the 2nd of Jan. I saw my local doc for a follow up that same day--she asked that I stop taking the antibiotics (after looking at the swelling which had subsided ) and the famotidine. She did a stool occult and reported no blood + well formed stool in my rectum. Also she said the white nail spot was nothing to be concerned about.
I was due for a physical a week later ie the 9thof Jan: by then my stools were back to normal and had been pretty normal since the 2nd. However I had picked up a cough--which was productive. My doc gave me robutussin+codeine and the coughs became less and no longer productive. My blood work was normal except my neutrophils were 45.1% (normal range 50-70%) and my lymphocytes were 46.9% (normal 18-42%). Could this be due to the antibiotics or HIV?
On the 13th and 14th of Jan I had night sweats. I called my doc and she sent me to have a chest X ray--which showed no abnormalities. Today I woke up with pain along the lower right side of my neck. Should I be worried enough to take the HIV test? If not what could this be?
ps: No lunula changes and white spot is growing out and dimming.
You can never go by symptoms. You should test for HIV and STD's. Talk with your partner about sex and your sexual histories plus tell your doctor about you concerns.
