Muscle Aches

Muscle Aches

Dr. Handsfield or Dr. Hook:

I wanted to run a scenario from my experience and would like feedback for risk factor(s) if any apply.
I am a 43 year old gay male.  I have not had any type of sex for at least 3 years.  I recently had sex wtih a man on November 16th.  I engaged in protected anal sex, whereby I was the recipient.  The other man wore a condom that I provided (expiration date of 1999).  I asked him to pull out of me before ejaculating and he didn't.  I sure hope the condom done its job.  He told me that he did not have any sexual diseases.

I am currently experiencing mucle aches and pains in my right leg (front thigh) that lasts all day.  In the morning, I am having muscle aches and pains in both arms (from elbow to wrist).  I have not yet been tested for HIV.  I currently take cholesterol medicine and plan on having my blood checked in a few weeks.  Do you think I should go ahead and also be tested for HIV?

Thanks!

This is patient to patient forum.

If your condom was intact you are at no risk.

I am afraid that i may have contracted HIV. Umm i engaged in unprotected vaginal sex with the same guy twice in one night. I do not know his sexual reputation. I do know him and its not  what i consider a one night stand. Umm.... tomorrow i have a STD/HIV test. I believe its too early to tell if i have HIV since its has only been about 10 days. I do have a muscle ache in my back.. I am very very worried that i may have contracted HIV.. When would be the earliest time that i could test and receive a good negative test. Is it hard to get  a RNA test?

Earliest HIV test is 28 days - taken from here : http://www.samedaydoctor.co.uk/manchesterclinic.aspx

They advise 28 days "We also do HDUO HIV testing which includes the p24 antigen as well as HIV 1 and 2 antibodies.  The HDUO test can be done  28 and 90 days after contact and and results are available the following day.  We can also perform a PCR proviral DNA test for HIV1 antigen.  This test can be carried out 10 days after contact."

However this is not 100% accurate as antibodies may not have developed by then. You need to test at 12 weeks to be sure.

There are other clinics - obviously I am not sure where you live, this is just an example.

On the PCR front at 10 days, the doctor advised me not to take that test. Yes I know it was on their web site, but he said it would not be very accurate , anyway, I did not take that one.
