NYPD police officer got blood on fingers with bloody hangnail

by nypd_32, Nov 06, 2009 09:48AM
While arresting a suspect who has been confirmed HIV+, I got blood on the palm side of my index and middle fingers. It covered almost half of the 2 fingers. On the OPPOSITE SIDE, I had a bloody hangnail. I am afraid that when I washed the blood off of my palm side, it washed over the bloody hangnail on the opposite side.

Am I at risk here? The blood didn't directly get on the hangnail. I am afraid that it washed over the hangnail and put me at risk.

You were not at risk for HIV from contact with blood on your skin, even considering the possibility of exposure of broken skin.

HIV is only contracted from inoculation of infectious material inside the body. Wounds such as yours heal instantly from the inside due to the clotting process, preventing entry of microorganisms into the circulation. Additionally, HIV is damaged upon exposure to the environment outside the human body and is unable to infect.

You were never at risk from this incident and do not need testing.
