Possible risk exposure

Hi doctor, About 3 weeks ago I had intercourse with a escort transexual who I met 2 times before. We always used safe sex, condoms and everything. I have also if she was clean and everything she said yeah, and ask me two. She has also used protection on her other clients by reading her page on a escort site. I always use protection but this time the condom ripped! while anal sex ( I was top) but I freaked out. She said she got tested, and gets tested evefry 6 months and Stds and all negatives. Im just worried I will have HIV..whats my risk...i got a test done im just waiting for my results, this anxiety is killing me..

Sorry to hear about your condom breakage.  However, you are doing everything right and your risk is modest at most.  Your partner said she is tested regularly and that she is negative.  Most people do tell the truth.  If she doesn't have HIV, then obviously you have no risk.  You cannot get HIV from someone who does not hav it. But, what if she dose?

Well, if she has HIV, your risk for an unprotected (by virtue of your condom breakage) rectal sex with an HIV infected partner is about 1 infection per 100 exposures (1%).   When your test comes back negative (and I anticipate it will), at that time your risk will be much lower since somewhere in the neighborhood of 66%-75% of infections acquired 3 weeks earlier will be positive at that time.  Following you negative test, I would then suggest you repeat your test at 6 weeks.  If your test at 6 weeks is negative, you can be comfortable that you did not get HIV.

Finally, even though the condom broke, my sense is that you have used condoms many times before with success.  I hope that you will not let this unfortunate occurrence keep you from continuing to practice safe sex.  EWH
