relationships with unknown women. So - as he is completely untrustworthy as to his HIV test status, I would like to be put on a prophalactic course of antiretroviral drugs. I know this might seem drastic (or not) but I would rather be subjected to the side effects of the drugs than to be at greater risk for HIV infection. My question is - where can I go to receive the treatment? I would prefer to avoid going through my regular doctor as I am on private health insurance and with this on the record, they will surely cancel my policy when it is up for renewal leaving me with no health coverage in case of any other emergency. I live in the northern virginia area. I contacted the planned parenthoods and according to the woman on the phone - they could get me an appointment later this week (which would put me outside of the 72 hour window) and she doesn't think that they do that there. I am going to call the county health departments when they open in the morning but am at a loss for where else to go. If they don't do it, can I just go in to a random urgent care and pay in cash? Will the doctor's there be comfortable providing those drugs or evaluating if they are needed? I am freaking out a little and would love to know I have done everything I can to further protect myself. ANy advice would be greatly appreciated.
How long ago was the exposure? Would it be possible to ask the guy to get tested; if he does a rapid test, he will have the results pretty much right away. I am doubting that many doctors would give you PEP based on the fact that this appears to be a low risk incident.
Call your local clinic or health dept, like you said. They will tell you more info, if you insist. It will cost you about 1500 out of pocket for a month's supply.
