Really scared about a hiv exposure!!!

Hey doc, I'm just writing cause I am scared as hell right now and my anxiety is killing me and I am having trouble breathing and concenrating on anything. I made a really stupid mistake by having viginal sex with a girl without knowing her past. The problem is that the condom completely broke while having viginal sex and I came inside her a little and pulled out right away when I came but the condom was completey torn and that scared me to death. I started freaking out and she told me to relax and said she was clean.

But a few days later I got a really bad cold and a soar troat and a little fever and my testicals and penis has been hurting a little but no discharge or pain when I urinate. And my testicals and penis still hurt especially when I think about it so I'm not sure if it's anxiety. So I called her to talk about the incident and to talk about her past boyfriends and that's when I really started freaking out. She told me she was clean but always seemed to have dated guys with serious problems and the last guy she dated for 6 years has been in prison a few times and has given tattooes in prison cause he is a tattoo artist and I am scared as hell knowing that. I did not get tested yet and this incident happened 3 and half weeks ago and I know I am at the highest risk possible of hiv especially knowing now about her ex boyfriend.

My questions are
1 - Should I get tested this week to know for sure if I am hiv positive but it's only 3 and a half weeks???
2 - I know I am at the highest risk of hiv and what are my chances that I caught hiv??? Please help!!!

You never had a risk and the test results that you posted have nothing to do with HIV.

In the year 2000 i had protected sex with a commercial sex worker.  Since it was my first time i even wore two condoms at a go. But after coming i pulled out with out hold the condom. Small semen dropped on her     when i pulled out. With my guilty conscience...i couldn't sleep. The next day i started feeling feverish like malaria, run a little temperature, lost appetite but never had any rash ,sore throat, swollen lymph gland. I felt really better after 6months.I also had protected and unprotected sex with my girl friend in 2001.Its now 10yrs now ...still having some guilt because i haven't tested yet... My girl friend during 2001 is now married to another man with a three year old son.
Because i am nervous in going to test to clear my conscience My Doctor said he is going to take alternative blood test (globulin and albumin)= Total protein...and other tests, BUN/Creatinine and blood sugar.....

All the test results came out perfectly normal.....Doctor asked me not to worry becos i'm ok from this alternative test but asked to come at my own time  for the hiv test if in want to to clear my conscience....

Because antibodies are produced to fight HIV, people with the virus may have increased levels of globulin.

I recently had a Full blood count and these are the results

u    WBC: 3.3-  8.7           * 3.4
     HB   13.5 - 18.0         * 15.4
     MCHC 30.5 - 34.5         * 33.5

ANC(NEUTROPENIA)  1.77        Mild neutropenia  Is less than 1.5   but above 1.0
      NEUTROPHILS  :  40 - 75       *  49
      LYMPHOCYTES :   20 - 48       *  46
      EOSINOPHILS :   1 - 6         *   2
      MONOCYTES    :  2 - 10        *   3

       TOTAL BILIRUBIN      2 - 17      *  6
       DIRECT BILIRUBIN     0 - 9       *  3
       INDIRECT BILIRUBIN   2 - 10      *  3
       ALT (SGPT)           2 - 12      *  8
       AST(SGOT)            2 - 14      *  5
       ALBUMIN              30 - 46     * 37
       GLOBULIN             30 - 45     * 39
       TOTAL PROTEIN        60 - 85     * 76
       SODIUM               135 - 148   * 140
       CREATINE             0.6 - 1.2   * 0.7

NB....Lymphocytes: 46% = 1,564 (absolute)    CD4 count = 750

WHAT DO YOU THINK...AM I OK AS THE DOCTOR SAID............PLEASE HELP ME

Ok, lets say this guy in jail did have hiv.  It doesnt mean you do.  You had sex with her once.  If the girl became positive through him and then went and had sex with you there is only 1 in 2000 chance of transmission.  Go take your test.  90% of people will seroconvert at 26 days, so your hiv test will be accurate.  I suggest going for the oraquick test.  You will know in 20 minutes and you can move on with life.

If it makes you feel any better, nobody on this site has ever post back with positive results.  They were all scared to death, just as you are and have come out negative.

Been there,

He is 37 years old and she has been dating him for 6 years and he has been in prison many times and she said he had a really rough life with alcohol and drugs and I know he is a tattoo artist and she said he didn't use any protection while he was with her for 6 years.

She also told me he got really sick for weeks and went to see a doctor and got better with antibiotics. Do you think that is a sign he has hiv or stds or do you think one of them would of shown any signs or symtomps of hiv or std's in 6 years. Just wondering cause his lifestyle is what is really freaking me out.

He got sick with a cold and fever a few months ago that lasted over 2 weeks and he got better with antibiotics and he recently got another cold but that went away after a week.

If you have hiv or std's, do the symptoms pursist and get worse or can you have them and they come and go like that. Just wondering.

Scared,

You do not know her past boyfriends history so guessing will not work.  The fact that her ex-boyfriend was in prison does not mean that he is HIV positive.
Tatoos are not a vector for HIV transmission.  I would imagine that even in prison there is some level of hygiene regarding needles.  Also, HIV is a fragile virus and does not survive when exposed to air very long (minutes I believe).

I am sorry I can not say what your result will be.  However, odds regarding a single exposure of unprotected vaginal sex (this is assuming no condom at all) are overwhelmingly in your favor and HIV is even more difficult to transmit from a woman to a man.

4 weeks is a long enough delay to get a reliable test result (in the order of 90%).

Try and relax, I know it is hard but once again odds are in your favor.

Hey Sparkeler,

I will definitely go get tested but there is one thing I was just wondering. If any of the two of them have hiv or std's do you think they would of gotten sick or shown signs in the 6 years they were together of hiv or std's or could any show early signs if they had it now???

Also, she told me he got really sick a couple of months ago with a cold and fever that lasted a long time, a few weeks but after antibiotics got better and was ok. Would he have gotten better if he had hiv??? And he recently got sick again but it only lasted a little more than a week and is fine now. She said he gets colds and sick often but if he had hiv would it go away or would it be really serious especially the fever.

There is really no way of knowing.  Alot of people with hiv can live healthy and not know it for 10 years.  You can't relay on the fact that he gets sick often to tell you whether he has hiv or not.  I have a cousin who is sick every other week and she doesn't have hiv.  HIV eventually weakens the immune system.  So I guess towards the end, you can get sick alot.  But I believe it's no longer hiv at this point, but AIDS.  Anyway, I assume you are bugging this girl and her responses are scaring you.  You really don't have first hand information of this guys health, only her word.  Just stop.  Stop serfing, stop asking, stop looking for signs, it's making it a whole lot worse for you.  Just go get tested.  That's all you can do.

Hey "been_there" thanks for writing me back, it is really appreciated!!! I am really scared for the fact that I don't know how long the condom broke while having vaginal sex with her and it last 10 to 15 minutes so it could of been broken for 5 or more minutes.

And the thing I am really worried about and is really freaking me out the most is that her ex boyfriend has been in prison many times and she told me he also used to tattoo in prison which is scaring me to death cause there is many known cases of hiv, aids and stds in prison.

I will go get tested in 4 weeks but do you really think it will be a negative test especially knowing what I now know about her past boyfriends???

Hello,

First of you are not on the moderated forums by Dr. H.  This is the patient to patient forums.

2.  You are not the highest risk of HIV, far from it.  First the condom did provide protection until it broke.  Then the brief amount of time you were unprotected does not put you at any significant risk of HIV transmission (assuming the girl was positive).  HIV is a very difficult to transmit, especially from female to male.  Any single exposure to unprotected vaginal sex does not constitute a meaningfull HIV risk.
Try and relax and please forget about the symptoms or lack thereof.  They are never an indication of HIV.
Please dont go browsing the web to fish for symptoms or data.  Most of what you will read will either scare you and be innacurate.

1.  I understand the level of anxiety you must be going through right now.
You can go and get tested at 4 weeks and a negative result will certainly be accurate but a test at 6 weeks will give you a definitive answer.

Try and relax, go and read the moderated forums for situations similar to yours and read good Dr. H answers and trust him.

I hope this helps,
