, the body takes some time to recognize the virus, and then, when it does, it starts producing antibodies to fight it off, and that is when somebody seroconverts. My question is, what is the time frame between when the body recognizes the virus and the production of antibodies. (days, weeks, months?). Is the window period the result of the body taking a long time to detect the virus or taking a long time to develop antiboodies to it?
In a normal person, immune system, after detecting the "invaders" starts generating antibodies after 3 - 4 weeks of exposure. However amount of the antibodies is not sufficient to be detected in a blood test, until 6-7 weeks. For a conclusive test, recommended testing time is 12/13 weeks to be 100% sure. Very low number of people with depressed immune system (on chemotherapy drugs for instance) may take 6 months to produce detectable amount of antibodies, but it is very rare and supposed to be the ultimate maximum time taken.
