Unprotected sex

Unprotected sex

Thanks for your time.  On December 3, 2007, I had unprotected vaginal sex with a man I had just met.  It wasn't smart and I have no idea what his "status" is or anything about him for that matter.  I do know that he did not "finish" inside me as I wasn't on any birthcontrol.  My question is 1. I had a negative ELISA on 1/22/08 and 2/22/08, both still within the "window period."  I got tested two weeks ago because I applied for life insurance.  It's taking an unusually long time for them to come back with okay to issue the policy and ofcourse, I'm thinking it's because of the HIV test.  Are both of those tests in Jan and Feb accurate enough for me to be 100% I'm not infected?  Thanks!

The risk from the exposure you describe is very low.  Most heterosexual men (less than 1%) are not infected and even if he was, your risk of infection from a single exposure is less than 1 in 1000 exposures.  The ELISA tests you had in February confirms this to a great degree.  At that time, nearly 12 weeks after your exposure nearly all (>99%) of infections that are going to occur would be detectable.  The insurance company is slow to get back to you for reason other than HIV.  You did not get HIV from the exposure you describe.  Hope this helps.  EWH
