Unsure and worried about 7 week negative result

I am 26 year old female who began a relationship with a guy whose sexual health status I was unsure about. The guy told me he was clean but had not been tested in a while.

We used condoms for the majority, but Progressed to not using any, as I took the pill.

The relationship ended due to other issues and I have since met somebody else.

I developed chesty cough around the 7 week mark along with thrush and white tongue.  This led me to go see my doctor and she took my blood via syringe and sent them off to the lab. It was a (S Hiv1/2) test and the results where back within 48 hours as negative!

I was tested for Hep a, b, c - syphilis and all the other common STI's and all came back negative. I will restate the test at three months but my anxiety, which I suffer from anyway is eating me up.... I can't think straight and I find myself looking for more symptoms on my body.

I have had the chesty cough for over a week and my tongue is looking white still, I also have developed swollen nymph lodes in my neck I'm assuming from the coughing???

Can anybody tell me what kind of test the (S hiv 1/2) test is? And the negative result turning positive at the 12 week test... As I am displaying symptoms?

Good news that it was a combo test.

Many people and HIV bodies would now consider you conclusively HIV negative.

The combo already tests for antibodies. From what I have read from health experts, if symptoms are due to hiv infection, then antibodies will be present and detectable.

Hey guys.... So I visited my GP today. I told her about my symptoms and she checked my chest. I've been given antibiotics for 10 days for chest infection and the spots on my throat have now gone.

I asked her what kind of HIV test she asked the lab to do... Her response was she didn't actually know. She just asked for a routine screen etc....

When she opened the results she showed them to me and they tested hiv 1/2 Ab/Ag. From what I've read that is a duo test..... Which would have been at 7 weeks- came back negative like I said... I will go back for my 12 week test too but wondering if I need to do a rapid test anyway to calm my nerves?

The first antibody test you took is a great indication, but it isnt conclusive.

Reliable sources generally say that Hiv-infected people develop a detectable level of antibodies (i.e. that which will show up on tests) within 2-6 weeks of exposure. Therefore, most infected people will test positive on a 3rd gen antibody test within say 2-6 weeks of exposure.

In rare cases however, people can take longer than 6 weeks to develop detectable antibodies. Thats why the standard guidelines suggest that people test at 12 weeks post exposure with an antibody test for an absolutely conclusive result.

Your 7 week negative antibody result means you are highly likely to stay negative. But , to be 100% sure, test at 12 weeks OR take a 4th gen DUO test immediately. A negative on the DUO will give you a conclusive result at this stage.

Any questions, please let me know - here to help

So does that mean the first antibody test I took is no good? I took it exactly 49 days (7weeks) since then my chesty cough has gotten worse, I've developed tonsillitis... Swollen lymph nodes, achy joints!  I know tonsillitis brings all those symptoms on but I am visiting the doctor on Tuesday so is the 4th gen test the better option to take now?

Also not sure if it's my Nerves and anxiety but Im having the odd muscle Spasm in my left leg!!

This is ridiculous, I've gone from being happy with the result to flat out going crazy?

The guy who I slept with seems to be in great health and I know lots of people don't show symptoms but he's just cracking on with his life and I'm sat at home very worried about how sick I am :(

A Duo test is the best test to take in the 3 week to 12 week period.
This will pick up either antigen or antibodies and sometime's both.

Laus, there are many things that could be causing your symptoms , which are far more likely than HIV.

Some examples include mono (Epstein barr virus infection) or strep throat.
Have you tested for these? If not, I recommend doing so.

If you are still worried about HIV, I recommend either doing a DUO test now (4th gen - checks for antigen and antibodies), which would give you a conclusive result. Or, if you are taking antibody tests, then test at 12 weeks post exposure to give you a conclusive result.

No not a DUO test, but really only need a DUO test up to 4 weeks, after that just an antibody test, which you took.

Thank you for replying Linuxx, I hope that is the case!!  Just a quick question though, is that test classed as a duo test because it tests for hiv 1 and two? Or is that a completely different test?
