Used Needle on an animal

This is going to sound really stupid but here goes.... Our cat is a diabetic and we have to give him shots twice a day. Tonight after giving him his shot I was going to put the cap back on the needle before disposing in the Sharps container.
When I put the needle back in it came out the side of the cap and stabbed my thumb. There was very little blood but it really freaks me out.  I just went through a major surgery due to cervical cancer that had spread and my immune system is really low already.  Should I be concerned?  Should I call my doctor?

have read that Only cats carry FIV. There is no evidence to show that cats can transfer FIV to humans. It is important to consider that FIV-positive cats may carry other diseases that can be transferred to humans, such as Toxoplasma gondii (this is especially important for immune-suppressed owners).
