Western Blot and HPV question

by mensa2222, Aug 31, 2009 10:22AM
I have a couple of questions

One is about the western blot test and the other is about oral HPV and association with HIV

In May of 2008, I had a HIV test. My lab report only mentioned Western Blot ans negative.  There was no mention of the ELISA test.  My question is was an ELISA test done and then it was confirmed with a Western Blot test - or was the only test performed the Westerm Blot since this is the only test that showed up on my lab results.

From what I have read, a Western Blot test will not be performed unless there is a positive ELISA test.  This has me concerned as Western Blot is the only test on the report. However it did come back negative.

My other question is about Oral HPV.  My ENT Dr, did a biopsy on a growth on my cheek  - the locaton is way in the back of my mouth where the last two molars come together by the hinge of my jaw - on the cheek.  Also, fro what I have read, oral HPV is very common with people that have early HIV - and can also be a sign of an early HIV infection.  This growth has been there for over a year and has not spread.  Could I rely on my negative Western Blot test that I do not have HIV and that the oral HPV is not HIV related?

Thanks for the advice

If you took the test 3 months since last unprotected encounter then the result is conclusive. A WB should only be done after an Elisa comes back positive. You can call your Dr's office for the full results to see if they did give you an elisa...if not then you will need a antibody test.

You can use any kind of symptom to like with HIV.
