A few nights ago I was at a casino. I noticed my gums between my two front teeth randomly started bleeding. I went to the bathroom and started to wash away some of the blood with water. My fingers brushed along the bottom of the sink and then without realizing it I put them directly on the bleeding cut to try to try to stop the bleeding. My worry is that let's say someone with HIV had gone into the bathroom with a bleeding cut on their hand or in their mouth and either bled or spit blood into the sink right before I came in. Could I have picked up the virus on my finger and infected myself when I touched my bleeding gums? I don't remember seeing any blood in the sink but I'm worried that the virus could still be there without the blood being visible. Could HIV remain infectious in the bottom of a sink long enough to infect me? I live in an area with a very high HIV risk. I've read that HIV can only live up to a few minutes at most outside of the body but what about in the bottom of a sink where it's wet and moist? Please let me know If I'm risk. I'm worried about this.
