Worried (hopefully worried well)

by Tullay, Aug 17, 2009 10:17PM
Hey guys,

I've asked a couple of questions on this forum before - sorry if this is repetitive. Well, basically I've been a self destructive kick recently. About 10 weeks ago I had unprotected anal sex in which I was the insertive partner (other person claimed to be HIV-). A couple of weeks later I engaged in oral sex both receptive and insertive with a person that again claimed to be HIV-. In that instance I had a severe care or dry mouth and used poppers. And most recently had oral sex with a person (again both receptive and insertive and with a person who claimed to be HIV-) while I had a canker sore . Last week (about 9 weeks after my last high risk exposure) I developed a flu like illness with fever, sore throat, headache, night swreats and swollen lymph nodes in my neck. At that point I got a rapid OraQuick test that was negative. My doc also ran an instant strep test (negative) and an HIV PCR test. I'm still waiting for the results of the PCR. I was contacted by the doctors office today and was given a rx for azithromyacin but was not given the reason as I didn't speak with the doc directly. I'm sorry if this question is repetitive or annoying to the members of this community. I'm just really worried and need some reassurance. I'm a highly sexually active gay man in NYC. HIV rates are equivalent to parts of Africa around here (10-25%). I'm pretty sure abstinence is on the adjenda regardless of the results of the PCR (the therapist and I are working on that one). Please if you guys have any thoughts let me know.

Thanks again all!

your only risk was the unprotected anal.  a test at 3 months post exposure will give you a conclusive test result.

I don't get it. You've been flooding the HIV forums with oral sex questions, and now you suddenly reveal that you had unprotected anal sex.

Learn this- the insertive anal sex was your ONLY risk. The oral exposures do not even show up on the radar. Your dry mouth and canker sores do not change this at all.

Have a final HIV test in two weeks- it will be 12 weeks after your unprotected anal sex exposure and will be conclusive. At this point, given your 9 week test, you should expect a negative result.

Going forward, you need to get your priorities straight: unprotected anal sex is high risk for men who have sex with men. You can't rely solely on someone's word concerning their status, or you will eventually get burned. Unless you are in a monogamous relationship where you have tested together and know that you're both negative, consistent condom use is essential for anal sex.
