accuracy of p24 antigen and antibody test (CMIA)

I had a event about 42 days before and I got tested in UAE for HIV 1&2 AB and P24 AG test I dont know about the generation. But both came negative and the doctor said you dont need any more further testing. I have few questions

1) Is this HIV combo is relaible / Accurates in 28 days (If yes how much %)
2)IF antibody is not detectoble it will detect antigen rt ? is there any case that antibody and antigen will not be able to dectectable after 30 to 40 days of exposure?
3) Is this p24 antigen test will detect HIV 2 Antigen also ?
4) why few people are putting 3 months time ?
My result after 28 days is 0.14
I am hoping for your response

I just want to know if hsv 1 & 2 and cmv virus can effect my hiv test. 12 week or 13 weeks little confused. Is hsv and cmv can delay the production of HIV antibody or antigen.

Those people that claim they contracted HIV with condom protected sex is flat out lieing. Persons the use condoms correctly and consistently do not contract HIV and most STDs.

@Teak
Frankly Teak, you are a real treasure because you are very knowledgeable, supportive and helpful in this field, and that is the truth and not a compliment at all. I wish you all the best.

As for the sad fact that people still have unprotected sex mostly because they believe that what they are doing (Having Sex) is something that 99% of the world population is doing and the world is just going fine. Of course that lack of education and the freaking idea (e.g. Losing the sexiness and feeling) play the major role in avoiding using condoms.

However, I must admit that I have read several posts of HIV+ people who confirm and say that they have used condoms in all their vaginal/anal penetrations yet they picked the virus from Oral sex. Of course, I still recall your statement Teak when you write "It doesn't matter what reasons they believed that have infected them", Nevertheless, quite many of them strongly argue and insist that the condom was always properly on throughout.

@RainLover71
I couldn't agree more with you about the media's fault. The idea of announcing about any ARV's medication ONLY must be to give a hope and support for the HIV+ people and NEVER EVER be considered a green light for having unprotected sex freely.

What's even sadder is when the media say that if you contract HIV then just take ARV's and you will be as right as rain.Like ARV's are the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.It's still a tough road for HIV+ people.Safe sex is the key.

Correct. Yes, and it is pretty sad that they have known that condoms prevent HIV transmission and people still have unprotected sex.

If you are infected the tests don't detect antigens at 3 months, the antibody part of the tests detects antibodies at 3 months.

Therefore, The DUO tests at 3 months post the exposure are conclusive because they will tell about the antibodies.... Right?

It just poignantly struck me how we live in 2012 with the most advanced technologies and still we cannot defeat this virus and not even invent a new way to find out the infection in a shorter period that allows people to get into PEP.

Teak, Please don't be mad at me, Just 1 little question.

You just said: "a Duo test will not detect antigens for HIV 2. DUO tests cannot differentiate between HIV 1 and HIV 2.". So, my question is: "Does a Duo test at 3 months post the exposure detect antigens for HIV 2?and Do DUO tests at 3 months post the exposure differentiate between HIV 1 and HIV 2?

No a Duo test will not detect antigens for HIV 2. DUO tests cannot differentiate between HIV 1 and HIV 2. Your test will be conclusive 3 months post exposure.

The combo (p24 and Antibody) test detects both, p24 protein, associated with HIV, and the antibodies. Therefore the test is highly reassuring ever earlier (3-4 weeks) when p24 is in much higher proportion as compared to the antibodies, in serum sample of an infected person.

1. Yes Combo Test is very reliable test and gives a very good indication of your status after 4 weeks (28 days)

2. Antibodies are normally detectable after 6 weeks.

3. Yes ! The test has the capability to detect antibodies of a variety of subgroups like M and O and as well as HIV2.

4. Having said that all, conclusivity of any antibody test can not be fixed before 12 weeks or 3 months because this is the duration defined by the health authorities like CDC or other State run health departments. Though we have never seen anyone turning positive after a 6 weeks negative test, however in order to say a test conclusive, we must get it done after 3 months. )0.14 is just a value which varies from test to test, the key point is, it should always be less tha than the cutoff point of 1.0
