chances of HIV infection

Hi Doctor,

I am in a big dilemma and seek your advice . Recently I went to Red light District of Amsterdam and had a sex with an Italian sex worker and this was my first intercourse but after this incidence I cant sleep well because of the fear of HIV infection. It looked to me that she was very well trained in using condoms and after the sex she removed the condom by using a tissue paper and during the whole time the condom was intact in my penis but after reading articles about some sex workers, who were infected from HIV and also condoms which are not 100% effective, so i was wondering if you could tell what are the chances that I might get infected from HIV?? I will look forward for your reply.

regards,
Das

you have been advised that you were not at risk from having condom protected sex.   all the what if's in the world are not going to change this fact.

not much else we can do for ya...

Did you ever discover any cases where people get affected from HIV despite the use of condoms. Also do you think if something went wrong with the condoms then people will first suffer from STD and then followed by AIDS

Latex condoms, when used consistently and correctly, are highly effective in
preventing transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. In addition, correct
and consistent use of latex condoms can reduce the risk of other sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs), including discharge and genital ulcer diseases.
While the effect of condoms in preventing human papilloma virus (HPV) infection
is unknown, condom use has been associated with a lower rate of cervical
cancer, an HPV-associated disease. Laboratory studies have demonstrated that latex condoms provide an essentially impermeable barrier to particles the size of STD pathogens.

Why would they use condoms that might increase the risk of transmission? It's not just to protect you you know. They will also want to avoid becoming HIV positive.

Hi Doc,

Thanks for your response, but I am still pondering about the quality of condoms provided by these workers because if condoms are of poor quality then it might increase the risk of infection and as I was not allowed to touch the condom so i didn't know about its quality. Do you think by using poor quality of condoms people will be become more vulnerable to AIDS or these virus which are very small penetrate though these condoms. Also do you think it would be good to have HIV+ test after 6 to 8 weeks...

regards.

Hi Das79,

The CSW's who work in Amsterdam, are for the best heavily regulated by the local authorities - because of this it has largely eliminated a lot of the criminality involved with prostitution. It also means that the CSW's have access to and are required to test regularly. Obviously this DOESN'T preclude the fact that it's possible that some of the CSW's could be HIV +.

In your case you have said that you used a condom. If the condom was used correctly and did not fail, there is no risk of HIV transmission.

And regardless of what you have heard or may believe condoms are fully effective in preventing the transmission of HIV.
