general concerns and questions

Dear Dr.
About 2 months ago I had unprotected sex with a woman whom I don't know. After about 50 days I went and got a rapid HIV test which was negative. At the clinic I was told that the majority will develop antibodies after 21 days. This kept me at ease until one of my friends told me it could take up to six months. I called the clinic back and they again told me the information about the majority. I have had no symptoms to date. No fever, no rash, no sore throat. I have had stomach cramps and felt tired for about a week but when I went to my doctor and told her the situation she told me this was unrelated to HIV and I would feel much more sick. She also told me that because it was one night and the only time I have un protected sex that it is unlikely considering the odds. I have been very stressed over this.
What I need to know is ..
should i get retested for HIV considering I got tested 50 days after the episode?
What is the truth behind the 6 month waiting period? The clinic said the majority takes 21 days, some have told me 3 months, my friend said 6 months
What are the odds that after 1 unprotected sexual encounter I can contract HIV
The stress I have had is undescribeable. Please give me some information. Thank you

your words on may 24th:

" To my understanding the 3% after 3 months are those going through chemo, taking anti hiv meds, or have an immune problem. Is that correct?"

sorry guys real quick... Am I really conclusive at 3 months? CDC website suggests that its only 97% at that point. Are the other 3% those with some type of immune disorder or something? Should I even waste time testing at 6 months? Thanks Final comment

If you had to test further we would have told you. And as you have been advised 3 months is conclusive.

Hey Lizzie how are you? so I've been doing really well. Accepted my 3 month test as negative and moved on however the woman told me I need to test every 3 months through out at year to be in the clear. I've never heard this before. What do you think? Is she misinforming me? should I seek any further testing?

Lizzie Lou and others. You are right. After a long talk with the clinic and my parents it really is time to move on. I need to stop searchin on the internet and reading stories that may not be true. Time to accept my multiple negative tests and take the advice from you all and Dr. Hook. Step 1 is stop coming on this site! haha Take care and goodbye all.

Thanks Lizzie Lou, as I said before I just don't understand Why theres so much dispute about this. It seems like everyone has their own view. I even called the CDC  today and they said the same thing about only 97% by 3 months. Granted I understand they are not Drs. and just reading off a page of information. To my understanding the 3% after 3 months are those going through chemo, taking anti hiv meds, or have an immune problem. Is that correct? Thanks liz.

please note...just because someone is a medical doctor does NOT mean they are hiv educated.

a test at 3 months is CONCLUSIVE.

A.S. is there a title for Drs. who specialize in an HIV field? I feel as though if I talk to one of them rather then a pediatrician I they would obviously be more educated on this topic and I can put my mind to rest regarding HIV. Thanks

I did let it go, I was ready to move on ... What she told me has only made me worried all over again. I don't understand why there's so much dispute over window periods and people saying 3 months vs 6 months. I even brought up the fact that people with extended window periods where those who take anit hiv meds, are going through chemo etc. She said it wasnt true. I don't know who to believe anymore.

Hey guys just had a physical at my pediatrician's office. I told her about my situation. She said my tests aren't conclusive and most places done test until 6 months. She made me an appointment with her for a blood draw in 3 more months. I was just starting to feel relieved and better .... Looks like another long 3 months

Teak nevermind I found the link you wanted me to see before saying this ...
http://www.cdc.gov/nchstp/od/gap/pmtct/Trainer%20Manual/Adobe/Module_6TM.pdf

Also read from your older posts and lizzie lous that people who develop after 3 months are people with immune disorders or chemo patients. That is not me! Sorry for the multiple posts but it is clear now that I have nothing further to worry about. Thanks for all your help and Take care guys!

Im sorry Teak I am not trying to upset you in any way please try to understand how stressful and long the past 3 months have been for me. I just want your opinion on this based on what it says on the CDC site 97% develop the antibodies by 3 months some are 6. Is the 6 the people with immune disorders and taking anti hiv meds? It's not my intention to annoy/or upset you I'm just trying to understand the information. Im sorry.
