help .. am i parionid????

by brambles26, Nov 05, 2006 12:00AM
Help....i am so over this.. but i cant get  my life back to normal...

I had an 3.5 and 11 week test in australia, both were negative.

but i cant get over this feeling that its not conclusive.

What if the test was a first generation test? Would this be less conclusive.
Does anyone know if 1st generation tests are still used in Australia.  As asked before, i cant get any info. I live in a country town and this is so hard for me as i cant speak to anyone.

I think the doc is sick of me and wont answer me.

I keep reading posts on aegis, the body etc that say 3-6 months unless 4th generation. Doc H has numerous times 6-8 weeks is conclusive.  Why cant i get over it.

The guy i was with had a dodgy tattoo that s whats got me worried!!!

What do i do!!!  Am i clear.. or clear just till i find out im positive!!!

Why cant i shake this feeling.  This whole experience has changed my life.

Dr. HHH would tell you to relax, and that yes, you are being paranoid.  You had negative tests, two of them.  1st generation or not.  Go search the archives on the HIV forum board, he says it again and again.

To: whodis, everyone
thanks for your reassurance.

I know i am being a bit parinoid and i think even if i had another test and it was negative i still would not be 100% convinced.

My life has changed.  I am now an extreme worry wart.  I just keep thinking what if?

What if i do have HIV?

What if the test at 11 weeks(78 days) isnt enough?

What if the other sites are right and 1st Generation test dont pick it up for 6 months and what if my test is 1st Generation?  (i know it was ELISA but no idea what generation)

Has anyone else felt like this on here or is it just me?

Fopr 2 weeks after the last test i was fine.. i was sure i dint have it, then i started searching the web (this site and others again) and doubt set in.  If anyone here has felt like this help me out!!!

I just need to know if my 11 week test is conclusive and how much?  The doc doesnt seem to answer me probably cus he has had enough of me....

GO TO THE ARCHIVES OF THE HIV FORUM (the one Dr. HHH moderates) and look!  He's addressed this before.  Or just go read some of his answers to other worriers.  If you don't gain reassurance from that, you have anxiety issues and should seek counseling.

Brambles,

you answered your own problem in the first few sentences of your question/concern in your initial post. You said you can't get over your "feeling"

Dr. H (and Doc please correct me if I am wrong) says the following:  at 4 weeks,   90-95% will test positive if infected
at 6 weeks, up to 99% will test positive
at 12 weeks, 100 will be positive.

so what is the probability that you WILL test positive given the fact that you ALREADY tested negative at 3.5 and 11 weeks?  There is a calculation to it, and I believe it is something in the neighborhood of 1/1,000,000.

I would recommend, please, just talk to an HIV counselor who is UP TO DATE on testing standards, and they will definitely tell you to just relax and come to grips with reality and your low (almost infinitesimal) chances of being positive.

And the absolute WORST thing you could do is to look on the web for possible symptoms, and other answers.  Some basic understanding of testing standards and HIV and other STD's is warranted, but please don't do more reading as it seems it is only feeding your paranoia.

-Regards, WorriedUS

Brambles,
I DO understand what you are talking about.
But, one thing I can tell you is this:
Nobody on this forum can help you any further. YOU need to get ov er this, either with the help of counseling or talking to a good friend or family member about this situation that you cannot seem to let go.

Your opening line of the original post seems somewhat contradictory.
You indeed are NOT over this situation.  Posting on here will not help you nor will obsessing testing for HIV help you.  One test leads to another, then to another, etc... a terrible cyclical system that proves fallible.

That said....I am done posting.

thanks everyone for you comments and understanding.

Can i take from the above that

1) Generation of test at 11 weeks does not mater?

2) and an 11 week ab ELISA test no matter what generation means im home free?

From what WorriedUS has said is seems that my test is about 99.999% accurate.

I spose they are the two questions i need answered.

Brian123 , i am glad to hear someone else knows how this feels.  it is a constant cycle...

If you went in today and tested for cancer the test would be about 98% accurate...

hmmmmmmmm....

what does that mean skerd,

am i missing something????

I think he means that if you were told you did not have cancer, and the test is considered 98% accurate then more than likely you would accept that diagnosis without a second thought.  So what is the difference?
