hiv2/lymes

by hiv2, Jun 01, 2009 05:43AM
In the last month on two seperate occassions I have tested positive two seperate times for HIV-2 on the elisa but negative on the western blot. I have never been out of the US, nor can I recall being with anyone from the countries where HIV-2 thrives..........but, I do work as a nurse and so am exposed to blood and have had unprotected sex with several prostitutes. I live in an area that is highly infested with lymes disease which I am told can cause a false positive on the elisa for HIV-2 and I have also had the vaccine for lymes which would cause spirochete shaped antibodies that I am hoping could trigger a false positive. I have been tested for lymes and am still awaiting the results. I have no symptoms of lymes or aids. So what do you think is going on. what are the chances I actually have HIV-2 considering  it is so rare. The Elisa stated I was "repeatedly reactive," on two seperate occassions, but again the western blot was negative.

The Western Blot is the confirmatory test.  If your Western Blots have been continually neg...then chances are...you do NOT have HIV.  However, you should follow up with an ID doctor to be sure.

Also...FYI.....you don't get symptoms of "AIDS" if you are newly infected with HIV...you should know that!  AIDS is later in the stage of infection when an HIV+ person becomes susceptible to opportunistic infections, and whose lab work indicates that they have progressed to "AIDS" classification.

There is a correlation between the Lymes reactions and HIV...but I am unversed in all that...hence why it is a good idea to f/u with an ID doctor.  This is why WB's are done....to rule out...or confirm infection.

I have had symptoms after my recent exposure of unprotected sex with my ex-boyfriend but my tests are the other way around. I was tested for Lymes ELISHA came back postitive and so did the WESTERN BLOT test on Lymes... I got tested for HIV too since I have read what you read and it has only been after 2 weeks of my last unprotected sexual encounter but the test is negative. Im going crazy knowing this test is not conclusive yet and that I could have it considering the Lyme results and  tests... because I have no recollection of a tick "bite" or "rash" but have had Tonsilitious, cough and swollen glands in neck.

can a positive Lymes Disease Test affect your HIV results? If my Lymes test are both positive could this be false? and I might have HIV? it hasn't been 3 months. but after 2 weeks I tested negative for HIV on the ELISHA test.... omg this has gotten me even more worked up.
